Esqual owners worldwide.
I need you help. The rubber tubing on the left rudder brake has broken down.
Mark and Nick at Arion have done everything possible to help me find a new brake unit, or rebuild kit. This is a 2005 Esqual kit from Arion, however, no spare parts are presently available. Some of the folks at Shellbyville think that this brake unit may be of motorcycle origin.
I will greatly appreciate any information on this brake system part or where I may find it.
Sincerely,
Ray Gage

Ray,
The kit came from esqual north america. The brake calipers and master cylinders are sourced from MotoGuzi, a european scooter company. Years ago we found some parts from a local motorcycle shop. You may try that same avenue. Unless someone who has converted to matco has the old parts laying around.

Ray,
When I saw the wheels and brakes that came with the kit, I knew they were not for me. I think they were for a go kart. At Nick and Pete's suggestion I switched to Matco wheels and brakes while I was building mine - same set up as they had planned to use on the prototype Lightning. I didn't keep the original parts. I really do recommend you switch the entire system - brakes and wheels to the Matco set up. I'm sure the Lightning guys can supply those parts.
Good luck.
Blue Skies,
Buz

Hi Ray, is this the beast? What we would call the master cylinder in the UK.
http://www.motoszea.com/detalles.php?id=150&usuario=0&idioma=esp
I bought one a few months ago as I thought it was the problem with one of my brakes. It was the Matco brake valve that was letting air in.
The contact at Motozea is Paco, he only speaks Spanish. The other problem was the shipping and customs more than doubled the price.
This was for the full unit.
I opened mine up and it looks fine inside, quite well engineered but not as Buz says for a go kart but for a scooter, moped….
Looking about it was used on lots of European small motor bikes.
Luigi, can you find one like this in Italy? Or maybe a seal kit?
The part number is 1FD15301, original manufacturer was AJP I think.
Regards, Clive

Ciao Clive and Ray
A friend of mine, with a motorcycle shop told me it is very common master cylinder for small motos.
Tomorrow after a contact with him and in positive case I'll keep you and Ray informed.
The brand is correct and the P/N too.
I will ask to the address given in Milan to have info.

Luigi

Luigi:
Yes, I should know what Ciao means hello in Italian, sorry. My rudder brake has a rather long rubber connection, which is what failed. Those illustrated don't match. Your efforts are greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Thanks for the information. I agree, it is not a quality part. Am considering using the Matco system. Have the Matco wheels and brakes, don't understand why the builder didn't use the rudder cylinder part also.
Respectfully,
Ray

Luigi:
Each rudder pedal has a separate unit to brake that wheel when pressed at the top of the rudder. It is the only way to steer during taxi. Am considering going to the Matco brake system since the plane already has Matco wheels and brake pads.
Thanks,
Ray

Oggetto: Esqual Brakes
Esqual owners worldwide.
I need you help. The rubber tubing on the left rudder brake has broken down.
Mark and Nick at Arion have done everything possible to help me find a new brake unit, or rebuild kit. This is a 2005 Esqual kit from Arion, however, no spare parts are presently available. Some of the folks at Shellbyville think that this brake unit may be of motorcycle origin.
I will greatly appreciate any information on this brake system part or where I may find it.
Sincerely,
Ray Gage

Don't get me started on Marc Ingegno - they are nowhere close to even Matco. And the brake pads are 23 EUR a piece.

Each rudder pedal has a separate unit to brake that wheel when pressed at the top of the rudder. It is the only way to steer during taxi. Am considering going to the Matco brake system since the plane already has Matco wheels and brake pads.
Thanks,
Ray

This is a supplier of calipers and master cyls for Esqual brakes.
http://www.ajpamerica.com/calipers.html
Mostly off Gas Gas Trail motorbikes(Spanish origin)
Interestingly I remounted my master cyls(AJP) to get the leverage that Matco
suggests and now the brakes are good to almost a bit savage with the
original Esqual braking equipment.

Malcolm Ferguson

As Malcolm says it's all about the piston and the leverage, I have
improved mine no end by moving the anchor point and the drive rod
position.
The geometry was all wrong originally. Also I have two pistons a side
(thanks again Bob) which was a step change but I'd like to put it back
to one, I need to make a little more of a change to the pedals and
master position.
The other thing which he hasn't mentioned but those who know Jabiru
aircraft will be familiar with is reducing the pipe size. Jabiru went
from 1/4 to ?? some time ago to get rid of the soggy feeling which means
not so much travel is needed on the master. That's an easier mod which
I plan to do first.
So although they are for a little motorbike they can lock the wheels on
a aeroplane it fitted correctly.
I've gone off Matco as the brake valve is adding air to my brakes, even
with new O rings.
Regards, Clive
