Has anyone developed an inside cabin flight surfaces control lock that uses the control stick and rudder pedals to hold both the rudder and ailerons in a safe and secure position during high winds when airplane is tied down outside? I am picturing in my mind a control lock similar to the kind used in Mooneys -- the York Loc . Thanks, Barry

I don't see any need for the Rudder lock since the weight on the nose wheel prevents the rudder from moving on the ground.

Thanks for getting back to me. I really appreciate it. I guess the only thing needed then is to secure the control stick, which can be done with the seat belt. Thanks again, Barry

That may be true and then even a rudder pedal lock wouldn't do the trick. In that case I would probably use some sort of external control lock on the rudder itself.

I cut a piece of polyethylene foam that fits around the stick to prevent side to side motion and a short piece of nylon rope with a couple of "S" hooks to hold the stick forward against the foam block.

Barry,
I don't tie my 601XL down very much outside, but when I do, such as at Oshkosh, I use a ratchet strap. It hooks from one rudder pedal on the right to another on the left with a loop around my center control stick. It is a little clumsy to put on, but I only do it once in a great while, so I don't mind it. The only picture I could find was one I took a Oshkosh, but it only shows where it loops around the stick.

I suffered considerable damage to ailerons and rudder last summer when a 70 mph wind caught my plane from behind. The rudder damage was probably caused due to the tail tie down pulling out. I had been using the bungee cord control stick tie down method for a number of years but the wind from behind shredded the aileron at the control horn on both sides.
The control surfaces have been rebuilt and as the aircraft is tied down out side I wanted a gust lock that didn’t put a load on the aileron at the control horn. My solution was to make a frame from PVC pipe that fits into the gap at the wing tip. I tried attaching a photo, hope you can see it. Another PVC pipe gust lock is attached to the elevator.
For the rudder I’m relying on ratchet straps and better ground stakes.
If anybody's interested I can get more pictures of the gust locks next time out to the airport.

I've seen people use two flat pieces of wood, 6 to 8 inches long, with a non-skid facing, at top and bottom of the aileron-flap gap, holding it all together with a threaded rod and a couple of wing nuts. It comes apart quickly, and stows in a small bag.
