I heard something similar on a RV-6, very interesting, is this a clear PU tape, also called helicopter tape? with a noticeble thickness?

Bob, This is interesting. It reminds me of an article in a recent Kitplanes where airfoils are discussed. One instance mentioned was of a canard airplane which was test flown and everything tweaked to satisfaction, then the builder decided it was time to paint. he put longitudinal stripes on the canard and the paint line after pulling the masking tape caused enough disruption of the laminar flow that handling was seriously compromised.

hi all, yes, this is clear, rather thick tape. since i posted i got a hold of another builder who helped me all the way with advice while building. he had a warp on a cont 85 hp and was very happy with it. when i asked him this morning about the tape he said, ''i guess we never discussed that tape. after i tried it i ripped the (at)#$%^& stuff off , it hurt performance so much. flew without it for 12 yrs. and my prop is still ok.
so mine will come off tomorrow!.

Bob and Lowell,

This show how sensitive it is, even if we can't compeer and Warp airfoil (RAF6) with a sensitive laminar airfoil, as was used on some canards, I almost said old laminar airfoil, but how old is the RAF6 then Smile

But think that we scale up the prop blade with the Pu tape to the size of a wing, that step where the tape ends will be a giant step for the air.

I asked Sensenich about there new wood propellers with rubber LE if it was must different performance then the old one SS or brass that is certified, but they didn't think it was much difference, even if they had not tested it !

I use tape from Powerfin props on my Ivo prop and it is thinner than others I've used. Seems to be holding up just fine and went on easily.

Could it be any worse than the bugs that decorate the leading edge
of my prop after every flight in the spring/summer/fall?

Bob-
The stuff I use came from Lonnie Prince (Prince Aircraft Co). It is
fairly thin, and a bit tricky to apply, but once on it is virtually
invisible....until covered with bug guts. : )

Guys,
I run an IVO with the SS Leading edge tape, anyone have any experience with
the SS tape causing a similar concern on the IVO? Anyone running the IVO
without the leading edge protector?

Lloyd,

I had an Ivo blade throw the metal leading edge tape off while I was in a misting rain getting ready to land to wait out an approaching storm. I think the tape was only a couple months old. I had to remove all the tape on all the blades to proceed. I so far like the Powerfin tape I replaced it with. Easier to apply. Lighter. Goes on smoothly. Sticks better.

Buy it from Warp.

It is pre-cut and much thinner than the 3M from places like Spruce.
