Gaggle:

I just read that some ROTAX engines are NOT approved for night flying, is this true?And if so could someone explain which engine and why?

I would also assume that if not approved for night it would not be approved for IFR?

It all depends on what kind of certification your plane has. If you have an experimental, you can ignore anything Rotax says.



The 503/582, and 912 owner's manual, section 4.2 addresses Rotax's limitation on night flying.

Thanks for the response, but could you go a bit further?  I do not own a ROTAX Manual.  

Is that ALL 503/582 & 912 engines?

Does the manual give a reason(s)?

What has to be done to make it legal for night flying?

You can, and should download the installation, owners, maintenance, and parts list manuals for whatever engine you run. Why would Rotax put such limits on their engines? Liability. Lawyers. Need I say more? 

Again I it's on an experimental, you can ignore what Rotax wants.

There is a comment like that in the Rotax manual. That said many do fly at night. If you are an Experimental then you'll need to make your own decision to fly at night or not. If you are an SLSA then it is up to the LSA Mfg to make a determination. For an example:  Flight Design CT Mfg. gives specific permission to fly at night and they set their planes up with all the required lighting for night operations. So the bottom line is Rotax didn't want the responsibility for giving permission so it was more or less passed on to the end users. I know a number of 912 owners that fly at night.

Thanks for the response, but I am still not understanding it.

I did some research under Lycoming and could not find any restrictions.  I called Lycoming and they never heard of restrictions.  As for Experimenter or SLSA, that is the designee of the plane, is it equipped for night flight.  As for the Pilot - That is the type of license they hold.   I will be flying a friends LSA with a ROTAX engine, it is equipped al required lights and I hold a PP license.  So, why does ROTAX say the engine is not approved for night flight?

  



As Bob says - maybe it is just the LAWYERS!

After all - What makes a plane fly?  MONEY!
