Yesterday Ed Hayden and I finished the last Northbound leg
of our trip, arriving in Fairbanks, AK! So far this has been
a really great trip, and some of the flying has been pretty
challenging in terms of weather conditions and such, with heavy
use of the freedom allowed by flying in the class G airspace
under 1200' being the only way we could have made it here
thus far. It's been a real adventure!
Although I am sad to have to cheat on claiming Hawaii, landing
in Northway, AK did complete my flying and landing in all of the
50 US states (I rented a twin and brought the keys from N104CD to
fly Hawaii), and Canada, Mexico, and the Bahamas. The RV-10
has brought us to all of these places in more comfort and
fun than I ever would have imagined when I did my first flight
in it nearly 6.5 years ago. Van's put together a great kit,
that is for sure. The $3000 or $4000 or whatever it is that we
paid for the seats has proven valuable in comfort, as I've
never spent so many traveling hours in a seat as comfortable as
these by Oregon Aero.
We'll have a good trip report when I get back, of course, but I'm
still looking forward to many more stops and many more days with
lots more great photos. So far from what I see, Alaska
probably not only rivals, but beats Hawaii for scenic beauty, and
I didn't know if that was possible.
It's been a heck of a ride, but with 50 states done, I now have to
contemplate if I want to give it a shot at doing the North Atlantic
route to Europe some day....

Looking forward to the trip write-up. All the past trip reports have been invaluable ammo in getting the wife on board with this project.

That looks amazing! And group flying looks like a lot of fun. I can't wait to see more photos.
The RV Flight Evaluation Board is still discussing your Hawaiian qualification flight. If disqualified it's a small penalty of having to re-visit Rhode Island.
I need to mention that the Classic Aero Design seats are equally expensive and comfortable.

Glad you made it there fine. If you have a chance, Bettles is a nice day
trip for your North of the Arctic Circle certificate, or if time
constrained, Ft. Yukon is closer but still just N of the Arctic Circle.
Also, if you have the chance, enjoy the aircraft campground at the NE
corner of the Fairbanks airport. It is an unadvertised gem.

Tim, did you get a chance to meet up with our neighbor, the Wilsons, Steve and Barb... in the Swift.
We are currently in Steamboat Springs.... and Friday will be joined by Dave and Windy Moore in their newly commisioned RV10... So that gives us 3 RV10's and one RV7.

I sure did, they're great folks! The swift group seems to be having a great time.

No problem, hopefully it will qualify. If it weren't for the fact
that all of these trips were done WITH THE KIDS, I'd actually consider
doing a Hawaii flight, but once you load kids and wife and my fatness
into an RV-10, it would just never work...so I had to settle for
bringing the key along on that one. I did spend a bunch of cash
on the twin rental...probably plenty enough to buy the fuel to
get to Hawaii though, so that should help me qualify.
Also, if I have to see Rhode Island again, that's ok, just
don't send me to Indiana... (sorry for you folks who live there,
but there are probably 48 or 49 states ahead of you for
awesome scenery)
Thanks for the off-line replies I've received too. I can't keep
up with as many emails right now, but I appreciate you all.

Talkeetna, AK is a very cool place to stop on an airplane adventure. It is the jumping off point for 98% of all McKinley climbs and the airplanes that fly there are really neat with the ski/wheel combo gear. They also have a great museum. Stay with Paula at the Northern guest house, uber reasonable and quiet - right across from the airport. If you get a deal on a base camp glacier landing, I will be jealous........not the regular glacier landing that they do at 1500 ft - but the base camp landing at 7000 ft!
