If I remember...someone on this list was looking into plans or a kit that could be modified into a Kolb
I am in the process of building a 1/6 scale of my ultrastar,but figured I would complicate it.
The wings and tail will fold like the real one,and the shocks I installed for the landing gear will be functional also.

If there are those that think this is not Kolb related,just say so and I will no longer post.
However, I dont see why it wouldnt,I have seen more postings about seafoam and other worthless subjects beat to death here than on any other list I am a member of.(5 right now,was over 11)

Hi Mark,
That was me that asked about a Kolb RC model. I was asking for my son who was in
Afghanistan at the time. (He was a civilian contractor, working on Bagram AB.
He has since come permanently, which frankly makes it probably even better, because
now he has the time and tools to build one.
I'm interested in anything you have regarding the model. I'll forward the info on to him.

Yes, it's Kolb related. Is a Kolb model airplane not trying to further the namesake? I think "yup".

How could an R/C UltraStar NOT be Kolb related. Very cool. Post a video, it would be fun to see it fly.I was talking to my neighbor one day about building a design of my own that's been kicking around in various iterations for awhile now. His advice was build several R/C models until you get it flying right, then do the engineering and build the full size aircraft. Sounds like good advice for a Kolb, too. I, too, appreciate your ingenuity in adapting materials and techniques to the model. Keep it up.

For the last 2 nights, been teaching my grand daughter how to fly a radio controlled airplane. She is in 3rd grade. The basic configuration of the model is a FS II with no landing gear. (No gear saves repairs) <grin>
Tonight, the light came on, and all of a sudden, she "got it." She was able to make it go where she wanted, keep the altitude, and eventually land it right out in front of where we were standing.
She promptly dubbed herself "The Flying Ninja Monkey."
I am now the grandparent of a "Flying Ninja Monkey." What more could any grand parent ask?
Well - since it didn't get broken - how about another flight in the morning?

Been following this thread on the list--I own a Firestar--and have been pretty interested in it since I put out a model airplane magazine that caters to builders. Please keep me informed, and Mark, would you consider publishing it in the magazine? Let me know.

Ok, here ya go. First of all, the Flying Ninja Monkey. Grandma didn't get a picture of her with the xmtr, this was earlier today working on a tie-dye shirt. (Gotta keep up the hippie traditions, ya know)
The rest are of the so-called FSII. Bear in mind that the primary concerns are indestructability and ease of repair, and not fidelity to scale appearance. Or any other kind of appearance, which is good, this thing has already been knocked out of a tree twice when it got stuck about 30 feet up. Duct taping one bamboo pole to another and then using the extreme end to poke and flail at the model while standing on a 6' step ladder does nothing to improve the cosmetics... Not to mention being flown full-bore into the sod a couple times -
Have used, abused and broken this thing many times. Recently covered the fuselage with superthin light blue tape I got a few years ago, it is lighter than paint. It doesn't help it much -
This ersatz FSII's primary virtue is that it is extremely easy to fly, very stable, and easily repaired. You can replace the wing and the whole tail in about 45 minutes. The fuselage part is virtually indestructible. The fuselage tube is an old carbon fiber golf club. The fuselage section is 5/8" insulating foam. The wing and tail is fan-fold foam, several years ago I bought two full bundles of it, and have used it to make all sorts of easy to build and dirt cheap models. Everything is held together with low temp hot glue from the craft section of the big box store.
I suppose that with a little attention to detail you could easily make this look a lot like a real Firestar, (it looks pretty good from about 75' away except for no L/G) but that would be wasted on this beater. OTOH, it is perfect for a 7 year old girl.
