I had an Anywhere Map back when they first came out--ran on a little Compaq
handheld. I really liked the presentation, touch screen, AOPA airport
database etc. My only complaint was it had to have external power and the
GPS receiver was also external, so there were a few wires which would
sometimes come loose. Otherwise, it worked great, though the processor got
to be a little slow after I loaded up the database with every possible extra
I'm thinking about getting another one--the latest model (Dell Axim) looks
like a big improvement in processing power and memory. They still need
external power, but the GPS link is Bluetooth. They're cheaper than a 396,
too, and you can add WX and IFR charts. The pocket PC capability is handy,
too, with GPS being only one of its tricks. I especially liked mine after I
cracked the canopy for a little fresh air somewhere over some godforsaken
middle of nowhere and my paper charts got sucked right out of my
hands--fooop!

PS

I saw a glider guy running a GPS with moving map etc the other day on his
cell phone. Hmmm. Screen was a little small...

I use Anywhere Map and am pretty pleased with it. I have mounted it to my panel using the "ball and socket" set up and the only issue I have is that I get some glare from the canopy glass.

I really do not need the XM WX since I NEVER fly or plan to fly anywhere where I would need that function.

I use a Dell Axim that the USAF provided and got the software pretty cheap. The BT GPS was bought off eBay for less than $50.00. I have less an $150.00 in the whole thing. It also serves as a nice backup to my GPS/Comm.
