The price of spark plugs may highlight a bigger issue that I have always been concerned with, the future availability of parts and maintainability of these airplanes.

I have exercised some privileges of the "experimental" nature of these airplanes after having what could have been a catastrophic gear failure. (I was not flying the airplane at the time). I found a local shop to manufacture the needed part (and had an extra made) and fixed one problem. Others have done the same and will continue to do so.

I have considered what airplane I would get if the time comes to replace my -50. I simply cannot think of another airplane that would fill my need right now and after knowing the Yak product for three years, it will be hard to buy something else with such confidence.

It is incumbent upon us as owners and operators of these airplanes to support each other in anyway possible, whether it is through answering a simple question (like Dennis always does...thanks D) or providing parts at a reasonable cost. (Like Doug Sapp). It also helps that we have someone on our side in the insurance industry (TJ of Airpower). There are some within this community that are less than honest and give all of us a bad name.

I have tried to share what I have or what I know (which is very little) with anyone who ask. I have depended on others to assist me along the way and have, with only a few exceptions, never been let down. I have repaid those people with either business or sales leads. I have educated those who thought less than favorably about Russian airplanes.

We need to police ourselves professionally, assist another owner when we can, spread the word about these fantastic airplanes, and keep these airplanes economical to own and operate. I am concerned that someday that one part I may need will only have once source and that source may be overseas. I must also have faith that I will not be the only one who has needed that one part and has used some old fashioned American ingenuity to make a new one.

Long term viability of these airplanes should be a group concern and as a group, we need to work on our collective future.

Soap Box..Dismount.
