Hi all,

 

Just wondering if amyone has any experience using aux tanks on their Yak's. Looking at putting one in the baggage area of my 18T for the longer trips. Interested in any plumbing details.

The standard system is fitted to a number of 18 T during manufacture in Russia is very simple.

 

The extra tank is 130 L, and shaped in a way to maximise the remaining baggage space; it's filled through the right-hand fuselage wall; the fuel goes to the same central fuselage collector tank, and because the rear tank is higher than the wing tanks, its fuel will be used first.

 

So the system had no extra fuel gauge – the standard gauges read full until the fuselage tank was empty, and then began reading.

 

The vent pipe for the tank was at the top of the fuselage behind the cabin.

Yes, the whole point is that the rear tank is higher than the wing tanks, so

when all are connected to the same standard collector tank under the floor,

then the fuel will first drain from the rear tank until it is empty, and

only then will the system draw from the [lower] wing tanks.



It is totally automatic, and no taps or controls are added!!

What stops the fuel from the aux tank flowing down and into the existing main tanks?

In the 52, flapper valves. In the 78 50, nothing. It is a direct gravity feed without a back flow flapper valve. In the later 50's, it is manually done with a transfer pump.

The standard non-return valves which normally stop the fuel cross-feeding

from one wing to the other.
