I cannot speak to the ongoing availability of 50 and 52 parts but the
availability of parts for the CJ6 is not yet an issue, and I really don't
expect it to be for several years AFTER the factory ceases production of
these aircraft. Prices however have inched up a bit especially for parts
which have electrical components. Two years ago I was told by the factory
that 2007 was the last year of production and 2005 was the last year that
the military was going to use the CJ6 as a trainer. The word at that time
was that they were going to a turbine powered trainer. But that seems to
have gone by the wayside as very recently the military purchased a huge
amount of used HS6A engines for their use in CJ6's. The factory now is
taking the position that production is "ongoing". An unfortunate by product
of this is that the military's purchase of engines has sent the purchase
price of the HS6A engine through the overhead. As a response to the high
price the web now has several folks selling these engines in the 12K range
which isn't all that bad if you get good clean logs. Many (not all) Chinese
perceive the US airman as a rich playboy who has little actual business
acumen, who can't read Chinese, and really won't know the difference between
a second, third, or even a forth overhauled engine. My advice is to insist
on proper logs and get those logs translated BEFORE any money changes hands,
and do not ever buy a 3rd or forth overhauled engine. We are at this time
dealing with the Czech factory who builds a 315 hp engine which is nearly
identical to the HS6A, if all goes well we may shortly have a solution to
the current engine problem.

About supporting our community:
Absolutely! If we don't we will all surly fail and our aircraft will become
hanger queens, barely worth what they were back in the "old days" when you
could buy one in the box for 25K. The availability of parts, the low cost
of the parts is only a portion of the reason why these aircraft are so
popular. The number one reason why ALL these types of aircraft (the Yaks
included) continue to flourish is not really because of the aircraft or the
few of us who are selling parts, it's because of all you folks, sharing
info, and taking a caring attitude about rather this owner or that pilot is
in the air or not, and giving your time and efforts to make it so.

A short note about parts interchangeability:
Dennis Savarese, Mark Bitterlich, and Jill Gernetzke, and myself have been
comparing notes and are finding many parts which are interchangeable between
the CJ6A and the Yak 52. The 50 is a question mark but I do know of a few
crossover parts there also. So before you start making your own parts, or
shopping at Lowes or Wal-Mart, check with one of us, we may be able to help.

Tim, here's your soap box back, and by the way, great post, spot on.
Always Yakin,
Doug Sapp

Lets hear a cyber cheer for Doug! Doug and other True Believers could certainly make money an easier way than supporting these airplanes and the community around them. Ours is an active and close knit community. Witness the numerous events we attend and the comraderie that develops. This is reflected by the reputable people that supply parts and services vital to our flying needs.

11 years ago when I got my CJ, the parts supply was spotty and my machinist became my backseater. Today I miss my backseater and a few phone numbers in my wallet will see me through most situations I could encounter.

Personally, I'm NOT touting the advantages of owning these aircraft anymore; the word is already out in the Warbird community and I'd prefer stable prices and affordable insurance. But somehow those Newbies keep on showing up. Good for them.

One Dark Cloud in this rosy picture, the re-valuation of the Yuan to the US Dollar, Likewise with the Ruble and Euro.
