Hi Clive
It is always a pleasure reading your posts. As you know I also have an Esqual with many changes done. I have purchaced a Lightning cowl a couple of years ago, I have not cut it down to fit because I to thought about the longer engine mount. How much did it help moving the engine forward. I have a top over haul just around the corner and was thinking of making the change then.. Also was the mount spendy?
When my mount was built it was 2 degrees off so my engine is aiming up 2 degrees of center line. Having an engine inline and weight more forward would have to help
Keep up the good work

Hi Dave, just catching up on my mail box so apologies for tardy reply.

I’m afraid I don’t know about effect of the C of G moving forward with the engine move as I did it at the same time as moving the tail plane.
I imagine the tail plane was the main cause of the stability improvement as it was the reaction to increasing and decreasing speed that seemed to do the trick. Nicks terminology was ‘faster you go you get a heavier tail’ that was easy for me to understand, the heavier tail lifted the nose and she slowed down.
Regarding moving the engine down you can get some movement in the Jabiru mounts by shimming the back and front of the rubbers. My Jab SP kit came with a set of shims though I fitted them all on the same side just to tighten the mounts up. The shims are just big aluminium washers. Probably about 2.5 mm.
The best thing about the Lightning cowls was the head cooling, although I had cracked it with the dropped outlet (which I copied from your recommendation) causing a good ‘pull’ on the bottom of the cowl the CHTs with the big ducts just never need looking at now. That and they look more modern than the Esqual ones.

Regarding the full permit, we still have some way to go, rather disappointingly nothing was heard for 9 weeks and then after lots of flying opportunities had been missed the report was finally read and more is needed. Now looking to stop the wing drop from being so high. CS-VLA recommends less than 15 degrees. The test pilot didn’t try and limit it as he was seeing what it went to. Hoping a little more discussion will help.
Either way more evaluation and my schedule is just about full already for next 3 months (in US for three weeks in November, West Coast and then Texas for Grand Prix).
Still moving forward, next target is to have the full permit before the kits 10th birthday, it arrived in summer of 2003….

Picture is at the LAA rally at Sywell, biggest event in UK, this year over 900 planes flew in.

Regards, Clive
