Re: 601 XL B
I am in the middle of my conditional inspection and have found what I believe to be excessive play in the rudder bearings. ( nearly 1/16" at 160 hours ). The 1/4" steel sleeve is turning in the aluminum and wearing it. ( the .187" aluminum ) . Part of the play is in the fit between the 3/16" bolt and the 1/4" steel bushing. I have kept it well lubed.
I have John Read's drawing from 2007 showing how to add Sintered Bronze Bearings ( Symmco SF812 - 4 and - 5 ) bearings. This requires boring the 1/4" hole in the aluminum to 3/8". I am concerned about the edge distance metal left after boring the hole to 3/8" OD.
I have found a 3/16" x 5/16" ( Symmco SF610 - 5 ) Sintered Bronze bearing I am planning to use. This would eliminate the 1/4" OD steel sleeve and require only a 5/16" hole in the .187 aluminum. This would still afford more bearing surface than the Steel sleeve against the .187" aluminum.
If I use this set up it would only take a few thousandths out of the already elongated hole in the aluminum.
My 2 part question is - is there a better fix available - if not is the 3/16" x 5/16" Sintered bronze bearing against the 3/16" bolt strong enough to stand the loads generated by the rudder?

Bobby,
I put in ball bearings. I never liked the original setup. It did not seem to be a proper bearing. There are some comments and pictures of it at www.n708hu.com

Carlos,
I believe you had asked for the dimensions of the bearing, It is 3/16 ID and 5/16 OD. The full drawing is at:

I replaced the steel bushings in my rudder bearings and it took out all of the play. They are just like new.
According to engineers the edge distance on the existing hinge is at near minimums so it is NOT recommended to enlarge the holes to add bearings or bushings.
