"Bob - The Rotax manual says 3 liters. 3 quarts is close enough which
on a normal oil change (not draining the cooler) but draining the
crankcase will put the oil level roughly mid-way between the min-max
lines on the dipstick. This being the case it appears that 3 liters
would put it right at the max line. Thom in Buffalo"
Hey, team,
The niceties of language need reviewing here as we are from
different corners of the globe. The U.S. decided to change the size (in
volume) of the 'Imperial' quart, and so they have the U.S. quart which is
smaller. It IS about the size of the litre (of which they have changed only
the spelling).
So it behooves us victims to consider the results of a
international mail system when sending technical data. Thus wheels may be
either tri- or mono-, quantities suitably spec'd and wing builds either foam
or whatever.
Otherwise we are going to get keen builders trying to stuff big quarts into
little pipes.......?
Cheers,
Ferg Kyle

Ferg,
You are correct. For the sake of accuracy, I was indeed referring to
the US Quart. The conversion ratio is
1 Liter = 1.057 US Quart = 0.880 Imperial Quart
Too bad the UK and the US don't convert all measurements to the world
standard metric system; it would reduce confusion and miscommunication.
I am a retired engineer who was fortunate to have worked for 1/2 year
in Mexico and a full year in The Netherlands and acclimated to the
metric system quickly.
The only thing about the Imperial system I like better than either the
metric or US system is when beer is served in pints ,
Cheers,

Hey guys
Figured I would make a note slight off topic.
A while back Rotax changed the length of the oil dipstick:
SB-914-026UL Introduction Of A New Oil Dipstick For Rotax Engine Type 912
& 914 (Series) 4/2003 10
The characteristics of some modern motor oils can result in slower return
of oil to the oil tank. This can cause the oil tank level to fall below
the minimum level. To correct this problem a new oil dipstick with new
level marks has been introduced.
Kinda important is to not follow the manual on how to prime (vent) the oil
system. If you open the system (take out bottom plug) or turn prop
backward, I think more than 1 turn (it may be 3/4?) or open the system in
any other way follow below
SB-914-022UL Inspection for Correct Venting Of The Oil System For Rotax
912 & 914 Rev. 1 8/2002 11
It has been established that damage of the engine valve train on the
ROTAX® 912/914 series engines may be possible due to incorrect venting of
the lubrication system.
Go to :
http://www.rotax-owner.com/index.htm
click service documentation tab on top
click by engine model
drop down and choose your motor
choose all document types
Be prepared to spend some time going through if you already did not.

You are not off topic in my opinion and you are correct. This SB and
the SB-912-036 (for 912) specifically warn of incorrect venting if
draining the oil from the oil cooler or allowing oil to drain from the
suction side of the oil pump, or turning the prop backwards a full
turn, thus drawing air backwards into the oil pump. This is why it is
customary not to drain the oil cooler at every oil and filter change.
It can be done but correct venting instructions afterwards must be
followed.
Correct oil change procedure is in SB-912-010 and SB-914-011.
Please note that draining the crankcase via the magnetic drain plug is
not included in the warning and "do not do" list in this bulletin.
