Hi

I am finishing my cowl (yeah right!) and am wondering how to install some rivets so that they won't fail or crack paint.

I want to install Skybolt CamLoc flanges. These flanges use -3 countersunk rivets. My cowl is carbon fiber with gel coat. My plan is to embed the flanges, after roughening up with scotch rite, in a bed of flox. I also plan roughen up the gel coat and put a later of glass over the line of rivet heads.

Is the above a reasonable approach or is there a better way? Should I remove all the gel coat before glassing the rivet line. The carbon fiber is not all that thick so I don't want the rivets to pull through.

Many thanks

Les

Les,

Hysol or another structural epoxy will do a better job than flox.  If you make some perforations in the flange for the epoxy to ooze through, that's even better.  The goo should make a little mushroom on the clean side, like a rivet head.   You also absolutely need a few rivets through the flange.  I'd take the gel coat off any place you intend to apply a lay-up.  If you can put carbon on carbon, instead of glass, it will expand and contract with heat at a more similar rate, and maybe prevent some cosmetic cracks later on.

And, you might consider a 3-4" 90* lip towards the back edge of the lower cowl, somewhere that makes a convenient hand-hold.  Maneuvering the cowl in place is sometimes a little tricky when all you have to grab is the vertical edge.

Guys, I'm looking at molding a small hand hold into the front of the door frame, just like on the Tobago gull wing doors, to enable you to pull the door down without the need for pull down straps.
I'll let you know how I fair with this idea.

Warm regards

I think you'll find that you can just grab the front of the door immediately above your head and easily pull it down.  No strap or anything else needed, even with the stronger struts.
