Does anyone have information on what can/has been done with gap seals
on tigers? What needs to be done on the legal side too?
I read a couple articles but dont have a good understanding. One that
I read talked about using hose insulation to close the whole between
the cowling and spinner. Any information is welcomed in this area.
How about vortex generators also?
Thanks as always,
Thomas

Closing the gap to the spinner has little or no effect on anything.
You can close the gap between your flap and wing walk/wing root, by not cutting the rubber seal and extending the top to go past the wing trailing edge to the flap trailing edge.
As for the other gaps, yes, I have tried a few things ... for gods sake don't tell the FAA. The change is negligible and not worth the aggravation of trying to make it legal.

I think that Gary has addressed the gap seal issue pretty well. As far
as the vortex generators are concerned, if there were true gains to be
had by them, someone like Microdynamics would have come out with a kit
for the Tigers/Cheetahs/Travelers by now.
Just out of curiosity, what do you hope to achieve with VGs? Lower stall
speed? I really don't think you'd see much in the way of a stall speed
reduction. A woman who flies out of the field I do has them on her 177.
She says that she really can't notice whether or not the stall speed has
gone down. She did report that it seems to handle turbulence better. I
haven't flown that plane, so I'll withhold comment on the turbulence
smoothing aspect of the VGs.

Bruce:
On the 177 it depends which wing you have. The first wing installed has
abrupt stall characteristics. If the plane has the 'B' version or cuffed wing
then the VG would make little to no difference.
