Yep, that's almost exactly what I imagined for the tail tie down.  Except I'm about convinced to go the Kwik-Lok Lifting Pins.  Don't know the cost, but it seems so cool to just push the button and insert the tiedown ring.  Push it and take it out.

Bill, I really like this idea with the pins. How about one of the threaded 

receptles threaded into the main wooden spar with epoxy?

I'm imagining a plate inside the end of the wing, glassed to the spar, rib, and bottom skin.  You could either use the threaded insert they sell as part of the kit, or just grab some steel tubing with the appropriate inner diameter and weld that to some 1/8" steel plate and bond all of that into the end of the wing.  I have removable tips, so this is an easier change for me.



Alternatively, you could use the inspection hole for the aileron bellcrank and get into the wing to do the same thing.  The bellcrank is next to a rib, so you would fabricate an angle with the fitting for the pin to fit into and glass that in place inside the wing, working through the inspection opening.  Seems doable, but difficult.



Nick, any thoughts on preferred location?  Advantage to one over the other?

Well, in my never ending quest to fabricate the most expensive tie-downs ever, I finally figured out how to find a price on these pins.

About $250 for three of the 5/16" diameter lifting pins.  Wow!  I DO really like cool, but I'm not thinking I like it THAT much!



No matter, the work of fabricating a fitting that is bonded to spar,rib,skin is the same regardless of whether I put a nutplate or bonded nut on the fitting to receive a screwed-in ring or a steel tube to receive a lifting pin.  All the same considerations as to location apply as well.

I'm not Nick, but last I checked the brackets inside the aileron inspection hatches had provisions for the tiedown attachment (right around where Bernardo put his machined T-piece). Eyebolt and a couple of nuts get the job done - I think it's been covered in great detail in one of the newsletters.

You could cut two 1" x 1" angle tie-downs like these. They are very light, and easy to attach to the ends of the spars. There's enough spar outside the last rib (in mine, anyway) that it's doable. However, I don't cherish the idea of tie-downs at the wing tips, due to possible adverse loads on the wings, or the possibility of failure in strong winds.

So, I gave up on that idea and prefer tying it down near the aileron bell crank area, as shown on my submitted pics. Do whatever flavor you favor, I guess.

My T-piece is a little more complex to fabricate, but it's probably stronger...and the eye bolt is removable. Choose your poison.

As you all know the Lightning doesn’t have wing tie downs as you find on most general aviation aircraft.  The recommended wing tie down location is the outer flap brackets.  The tie downs you usually find at most general aviation transient areas consist of either old ropes covered with sand and other grit or chains.  Both will damage the paint and or the metal of the flap brackets.  The following is a solution to that problem.    



We purchased six feet of the strongest nylon strapping used in technical rock climber harnesses and three oval Carabiners at REI Coop for $21 66.  We cut the nylon strapping into 18 inch lengths, folded them back on each end approximately five inches and had an upholstery shop (for $10) sew the loops with heavy duty nylon thread.  Total cost $31.66.  You feed one end of the strap over the outer flap bracket and hook the Carabiner through the two loops and then tie the plane down with either chain or ropes through the other end of the Carabiner.  The total weight of the straps and Carabiners is small and we keep them and nylon tie down ropes in a small bag behind the seat in the plane.    Gary N335AL Sn 133

Hi Max,

you know, it would be easy enough to fabricate couple of angle shaped tie downs and simply drill and bolt it to the underside of the wing. Of course, you would have to put a spacer inside the wing that would fit between the skin and bracket. Simple. I like.
