We set the top cowl 1/8" to 3/16" below the upper edge of the spinner. It drops down just right. Don't worry about the gap changing between the spinner and prop. If you get it right from the start it doesn't change.

On my 8A I biased the cowl ¼” down on the spinner (as in ¼” from the spinner being exactly in the center). 10 years and 700 hours later it is still ¼” down – so no engine slump.
On the 10 I did the same but with the James Cowl that translated to the top of the spinner being flush the top of the cowl, and the bottom of the spinner being ¼” above “flush” to the bottom of the cowl. 58 hours so far and the engine has not moved.
I’ve seen a few long time flying RVs with the spinner proud above the top of the cowl. You may not want to bias the cowl beyond the top of the spinner being flush with the top of the cowl.

I'm interested in knowing how long the engine hung on the mount before the cowling was fitted; then what the drop results were.
Mine has been hanging for nearly a year and I can't imagine getting it to drop too much more - even when it starts operating.

This isn't a measurement exactly, but I'll tell you I planned
for mine to drop based what other non-RV-10 builders were saying
at the time, since I was one of the earlier completions.
I found that it didn't drop for my RV-10 nearly as much as I
expected it to based on what they said. So I'd go with your
first reply and maybe do a max of 1/8" or 3/16" if you really
want to push it. Chances are you'll end up about right maybe
with 1/8" but any more and it may be high forever.

At initial build I fitted the cowling to match the spinner and the engine had only been hanging for about a month. Then after two years and 250 hours of flying the drop was about 1/4 inch--fairly easy to correct by placing washers (1 thin and 1 thick) on the bottom motor mounts. I had to unbolt twice to get the proper washer thickness in order to have a perfect height. It may be possible to mathmatically calculate the washer thickness but that would be way above my pay grade. Jay Rowe

Hung the engine 2/5/11. Cowl was fitted four weeks later. So it's been about 20 months with no drop. So when you see the hub sitting 1/8" proud at OSH, you'll know why.

Ours didn't drop any noticeable amount. We used the Lord mounts (the others weren't available), which I've heard results in less dropping, but you'll find plenty of people that have seen a drop with the Lords, so seems difficult to preduct.

I'm thinking that the reason some have a little more drop
than others, may be that some people hang their engine and
have it sitting on there for a while during the build and
some get through the cowl fit process quicker. They must
move down pretty quickly initially, but not move very much
over time after the initial "set".

Thanks for all the replies, will go with Dave's suggestion of 1/8 to 3/16 of an inch, engine has only been on a month so I expect until first start and then first 100 or so hours I will see that expected drop. Apparently static sitting has very little impact on the mounts, which in my case are Lords, it's the flying loads that have the effect, heat and torque loads etc. My local AP (approved person) has said to me that it's much better visually to have the spinner sitting high in relation to the top cowl than the other way around, but as has been said even after some time flying, if you need to "pick up-even out " the set of the spinner to cowls the mounts themselves can be packed with spacers. It's way above my pay scale as well to work any formula for that one, it just goes to show its an art not a science. Cheers again from Western Australia

Van's instructions say after all of the fitting to install the smaller diameter pins in the top rear hinges. That just gave me another .025" gap at the top rear and lowered the front another 1/16". I ended up with top of cowl 3/16" lower. I had engine hanging very little before fitting cowl. The relative position has not changed, but the cowl hinge eyelets do wear hence the black streaks found after flying occasionally. So I think my cowl has dropped slightly in 88 hours and engine has sagged the same. If everyones stock cowl fits like mine the bottom sticks out below. If I was doing it over, I would keep top rear cowl gap tight with no clearance during fitting. I also would provide 1/4" clearance between spinner back plate and fwd cowl to make removal easier. 1/8" is just too close. I would also cut slot for nose gear leg fairing 2" deeper with removaable piece/nutplates.

+1 on the spinner/cowl clearance and the larger slot for the gear leg. I did the latter before paint, but the spinner/cowl gap would have been too much work to fix.

I guess I will add my two cents. When I fit the cowling my engine had only been hanging for 2 weeks. I used a 1/4" gap all around the spinner. I did not use a prop hub simulator, I used an old hub. I set the top of the cowl even with the spinners. After 6 months and 25 hours of flying, the spinner is now 1/8" lower than the top of the cowl. Most people won't notice it, but I do. I have acquired spacers that I am going to use at the first annual to raise the engine back up to even. Some of the slumping occurred prior to flying.
I also added around 2 inches to the opening for the gear leg.
Something that will ease the cowl removal and install process is to split the inlet baffle for the FAB. I installed only the lower and side baffles on the "cowl side" of the inlet, and the upper baffle on the FAB box inlet. That way when it is removed the cowl simply falls away from the baffle on the FAB box. It makes is much easier to remove the lower cowl.
