I'm just getting ready to rivet the fuel cap flanges into my tanks, and I'd like to have (visual level inspection) tabs in my tanks. I was thinking a good level would be at 20 gallons. I don't suppose anyone with a flying plane has a measurement from the tank skin to the fuel level with 20 gallons in their tanks, do they?

Gosh this is a tough one for me to remember but I think 20 may put it so the fuel is about at the bottom skin below the filler. Anyone else remember for sure?

I don’t have any…..but the way the tanks are on the plane the bottom of the tank comes up pretty fast. The markings would not be linear either. Sorry not much help……with fuel flow and float type gages, I have a pretty good estimation as to how much gas I have in each tank…..once I burn off the first 6 gallons in each tank that is……

Ed, someone on the list (sorry don't remember who) has done a calibration and chart showing fuel remaining at the opposite end of the tank, ie for a low level fuel sensor. If they respond you might be able to get some info from them. I put fuel tabs in my tanks showing 1/4, 1/2, 3/4, based on the wing dihedral, and an educated guess. I haven't verified any gallon numbers as the tanks have not been filled yet. I could measure how far down from the filler cap my indications are but it's pretty un-scientific. I figured the tabs would give me an indication of some sort, and I could live with the numbers, whatever they are.

once I burn off the first 6 gallons in each tank that is……
Sounds like a Dynon Skyview setup. I agree however, before each fill up I look at the gauges and I look at the fuel totalizer. the gauges are usually pretty close (granted I adjusted them to match fuel loaded each time) but the totalizer is usually with .4 total. That is based on a few items, usually I didn’t quite fill it to the top since the pump may be on a slight slope at ne fill up, I may ot have filled it up to the top, in both cases I tell the Skyview I have a fill up (aka 60 gallons)
For the preflight, I know that if the fuel is showing I have at least gallons. but again I know before hand what I have in the tanks from the gauges and totalizer. I am confident they are accurate.

I think that is about 1.5 inches from the bottom.

I have a rough indication with the large-5 rivet used to fill the tooling hole on the outer end rib. You can see it through the fill hole. When the fuel level is at that rivet there is roughly 18 gallons in the tank. You can check it on your plane once you get flying. Just fill to the rivet and note fuel pumped in, then see where you end up once tank is filled completely.

I've had tabs in the tanks for a few years. They're great to have. I just bent up an assembly out of stainless and prosealed it to the back of the tank. The tabs are about .75" square.
I wanted one about mid way and one down just a few gallons. After they were installed I calibrated them at the fuel island. For my installation, the mid tab gives me about 18 gallons and the upper tab is at 28 gallons. Since it's 10 gallons between tabs, it's pretty easy to gauge the quantity.
We usually fill to the top tabs after each flight. That's just our way of managing the fuel bill. That said, it's kind of helpful to keep it down a little since when the tanks are full, it's pretty easy to vent fuel onto the floor when it warms up. And being down 2 gallons doesn't matter on too many flights.

I installed a tab about 2.5 inches down from the fuel cap (top skin). It does two things; I can see the fuel easier as the tank gets near the top and it gives me a a way to tell when I'm within about two gallons from the top. This is very helpful on hot days to keep the fuel from expanding overboard.

Sorry, no measurement for 20 gallons. With fuel flow and floats we are very confident in fuel status. I know that you have about 6 gallons remaining when fuel level is at bottom of tank directly beneath filler. That is as low as I usually go and provides me with one hour+ reserve.
