Hi all,
I am trying to get my EA-81 running and am confused about how to correctly set the timing. I have located two notches on the flywheel and wonder if one or the other indicate TDC for piston #1.

Hi John,
Remove the spark plugs, start at number 1 cylinder cast marked on the top of the engine block and rotate the engine until you can see the piston in a compression stroke. Both exhaust and intake valves will
be closed. I check the alignment of the distributor and the rotor as it approaches number one distributor point. The mark on the flywheel should be aligned with the top dead center position of the piston. Use a piece of welding wire
to observe the actual top position of the piston. Not too hard to do so far. The distributor is rotated to put 30 degrees in a direction which ignites the fuel mixture ahead of the top dead center position. That is, the ignition
has to fire the fuel at 30 degrees before piston reaches the top most position. You can use a protractor or a digital level on the flywheel or mark the flywheel to indicate the alignment and secure the distributor.
A timing light can be used to proof and final adjust to 30 degrees when it’s running. Unlike aircraft engines, you can run the engine for timing etc. without a propeller on it and be safer. Once done, this is a good time
to remove the plugs and progressively adjust your valves at a .014 gap while you’re at it.
If the notches you refer to are opposite each other, only one will align with TDC of the #1 piston. If they’re near one another, pick the one that aligns TDC and check the other for the 30 degree before-TDC position.
