I have a Pulsar XP (860 TT on 912UL 80 HP) and the cockpit has a distinct mechanical/ fuel smell. Nothing is leaking at the fuel line connectors to the fuel tank selection switch. However, I do have a wee bit of very light moisture that has become evident at the joint of the left wing to the fuselage-at the joint I have 1.5 Inch 3M tape I've used to close the gap as gap tape and it's getting a little tacky on the underside. Can't tell if it's from the fuel tank check valve or at the joint of the wing. But, no fuel drips on the hanger floor ( I have a Carbon Monoxide alarm-so, the smell is not of exhaust or fumes. It just smells like the cotton fabric sound covering on the walls has taken a lot of smell over the past 14 years. Incidentally, I have not taken the wings off, nor did the previous owner. But, I think it's plausible that it's a fuel line connector.

Any thoughts on this? Had a similar situation. Is a Glades Fresh Scent plug-in the answer? (If It was my wife's plane it would smell like lavender when you pushed open the canopy! Ha!)

A number of us have had fuel smells in the cockpit in the past, due primarily to inexplicable percolation of stuff through rubber fuel hoses in the cockpit. This issue was discussed at length a few years ago both on the web group at at the gathering in Kansas.

If this is the problem that you have then a solution is to change the hoses out for teflon hoses. A number of us have done that successfully. Some years back I did a little power point presentation on the issue for the Kansas gathering. Happy to send you a copy if you would like.

If you have the original resistance fuel Level sending units, don't forget to check the electrical connection terminal packing seal. That fiber gasket/seal eventually dries out and leaks just enough to get wet and cause a smell.

After 14 years I would go along with Brian's theory of deteriating fuel

Hi Keith,

The issue we had was actually with new fuel hoses- - - gates and other brands of hose as well. Anyhow the teflon types immediately solved the problem.

Brian ,
I also go along with the brand problem - another problem I have
experienced is swelling of hoses internally causeing a restriction - this
also applies to hydraulic hoses because of the high pressure with hydraulics
it allows fluid through but doesn't allow the fluid to return when the
brakes are released causeing drag & wear.

The rubber fuel lines uned in the Pulsar will cause the
oder of gas when the cockpit is kept closed. The only fix
is to replace the lines with aircraft fuel lines.
