Fellow Builders:

I've been doing quite a bit of welding while building
my canopy arms the last few days. I rarely use my MIG
(wire-feed) welder but yesterday I had a chance to use
it and it came in real handy.

I'm working on my canopy latches and each one has
three springs inside that I thought would disintegrate
if I tried to weld near them. I know that if I used
my gas welder, the time to heat up the parts would
ruin the springs. This left me with the idea of using
the wire-feed welder a little at a time to avoid
building up too much heat.

I still didn't feel comfortable welding near the
springs so I decided to try something. I spotted my
handy, Silly Putty egg on the shelf and decided to use
the putty to shield the springs. It worked great!
The springs weren't even discolored after welding
milimeters away from them.

I posted picturs here:

and here:

You can see the residue from the Silly Putty on the
second picture near the spring. I do have less Silly
Putty now for hole spotting because it gets burned up
in the process, but the springs are still working and
I'm one step closer to installing my canopy.

Happy Building,

Just a thought from burning some of the stuff I work with. Make sure you don't inhale burnt Silly Putty fumes. Could be toxic, and I couldn't find it on my periodic table of the elements Wink
