If one decided to use VGS in place of the slats
on a 701, where would the datum line be? More importantly
how far back from the leading edge of the wing--at what % of cord-- would the CG range start?

Frank,
You might try looking through this website. I placed the vg's on my HDS per their measurements and have been very pleased.

VGs are not a replacement for slats. VGs will make a poorly performing airfoil work better. Find a copy of Abbot and Von Doenhoff (A&VD) and read the chapter on how slotted airfoils work. The slat on the front of the 701 wing are a part of the airfoil. The slot is "carved" through the wing to create doubling of the lift coefficient of the airfoil. When the slats are removed you are entering the area of "experimental airfoils. Listers - before you flame me read the chapter in A&VD.

I took the slats off my 701 and installed VGs three years ago and never looked back. I love them. The position of my trim tab did not change so that tells me the CG did not change any significant amount. The plane takes off easier, lands easier and may have gained a few miles per hour at the same throttle setting. Does the plane get as much attention without the slats, no, but that isn't why I fly.
If you own a 701 and haven't tried VGs please do not knock them.
When I read various forums and someone says I don't own one and have never tried it but this is my opinion, it makes the forums less useful.
