Why do most guys put the stab/elevator VG’s back at the hinge line (on the bottom of stab of course) and not more forward like on the wing? Is there some guidance on this? It seems to me it would be like putting the wing vg’s back just in front of the flaps or aileron hinge? Trying to decide where to put them.
Thanks,
Scott

I'm no aerodynamicist, but my guess is that is the critical spot where the boundary layer needs to be energized, whereas on the wing the critical lift area is near the front?????
Anybody know the engineering behind the placement?

I was just wondering if someone’s VG instructions were to place them there or if one guys saw it and just copied it. I would think the tail (airfoil) would have the same lift characteristics as any other?

I was told to put them there by Jerry at PNW Aero. I didn't ask why but they did solve the lack of elevator authority at stall.

Thanks Al. I made my own vg’s and have no “instructions” so wasn’t sure if that was the best spot but figured someone must have figured it was. I will put mine there too.
Thanks again everyone.

Just a SWAG but I'd say it's to keep the flow attached to the elevator at high deflection angles. The effect would be more analogous to the effect of slotted flaps. In this case it is increasing the effectiveness of full up elevator.
