Hello all,
I´m starting building the center wing, main spar webs are ready and also ribs. At this point I have to plan some modifications to install the landing gear. I want to change the original for the aluminium spring gear and I want to build it from 7075T6. Groove spring gear is spensive and the main problem is deliver this big part to Spain. If someone has the main dimensions or the plans to scratch build this part would be apreciated.
Another possibility I´m study is to use composite legs fabricated here in Europe, has anyone using them with good results? The main advantage is the weigh saving.
Thaks to all

Hi Marcos,
I’d reconsider the spring gear.  It’s heavy, stays in the wind across the belly and leaves too much bounce in landings for a light 601.
The original gear built into the wings is more difficult, but tracks better, needs little to no maintenance and their stress is better distributed on the plane.
The original gear is lighter than what you’re going to find in composite as well.
The only advantage for the spring type gear is the work putting it on.  Yes, it’s easier, but a lesser product in the end in my opinion.
Respectfully,

Larry McFarland  601HDS with standard gear
Piper PA28 with like gear.

Marcos,
I’d also recommend you also reconsider 7075T6 as it has a tendency to corrode badly.  It’s stronger, but not a long life aluminum.
It would tend to fracture much easier in high stress even though initially, it’s much stronger than the rest.
