How good are the positions given for the aileron cable fairleads on 6B22 (02/05)? The position of the forward fairlead seems a little vague and I find the drawing confusing. Does anyone have a copy of the portion of drawing 6B11 (01/0 showing the locations of holes for cables, wires, etc., in the side skin? Any info or pix will help.
Thanks!
Tim

Tim,
I was confused too. The hole for the balance cable is right up against the seat back 6B5-1 (7mm away & 120mm from the floor), so there is a plain piece of nylon riveted to 6B5-1 to keep the cable from rubbing on the seat back. The hole for the aft cable is 110mm directly above the Z 6B1-7. Hope this helps.

I'm still confused. The nylon piece(s) riveted to the back of the seat panel... is there one on each side, butting up against the side skin or?

I guess you could say that there are two pieces to the balance cable fairlead and the two pieces are at right angles to one another. One is for the side skin hole that is riveted to the side skin and the other one riveted to the aft side of the seat back just to protect it from possible rubbing by the cable. That one is at right angles to and does butt up against the side skin.

Tim,
Put another way: There is a fairlead riveted to the side skin to guide the cable through the side skin. This fairlead puts the cable very close to the back side of the seat back. To make sure that the cable does not rub against the seat back, they put a piece of nylon on the back side of the seat back to keep that from happening.

I understand, thanks. The next question is how accurate is Zenith's placement of the holes? Do the cables run straight and true or are they being deformed a bit by the fairleads?

As I recall, both cables are deflected very slightly at the fairleads, which is the only reason for the fairleads, anyway. I think the placement really has to do with avoiding interferences within the fuselage, not making the cables straight from point to point. I could easily be wrong about that since some builders have used pushrods instead of cables and those would have to be straight, point to point.

Thanks. I assume the reason the fairleads are slotted is to facilitate wing removal inasmuch as the rivets could be drilled out and the fairleads removed from the cables.
I seem to remember seeing quickbuild kits at Oshkosh that simply had a hole in the fairlead, not a slot.
I see where it says to use a piece of safety wire across the slot to prevent the cable jumping out so am I correct that the tension of the cables usually pulls them against the nylon portion, not the safety wire?
Sorry if I seem a bit dense but I'm just trying to make sense of it all.

Tim,
The wings can be removed by disconnecting the cables from the bellcranks in the wings.
Some of the fairleads are slotted so that you can make up the cables with their terminal devices and still be able to get the fairlead in place. If there is a hole instead of a slot, the cable must be threaded through the hole before the terminal devices are installed. The slot is mainly a convenience thing. With the safety wire in place during installation of the fairlead, it just makes handling easier. . The way they are situated and aligned, there is not much chance that the cable will jump out of the slot after it is installed, so the safety wire is just a belt and suspenders thing from that standpoint.
