I've learned a lot this week, mostly how little I really know even after 1,400 hours in type.
If you over-fill your oil system, your motor will barf out the excess. In a Chang, this will be down the port (that's "left" for you Air Force guys) side of the aircraft. Still, there will be Too Much Oil remaining and a radial engine is the finest high-powered eggbeater known to man. Oil gets on the back of the cylinders, gets thrown up onto the rods, goes who-knows-where-else and pretty soon it's foam-o-rama.
Over-filling the oil system NOT RECOMMENDED. Dennis says that 13 liters is plenty.
The sump system holds more than a liter of oil. If you haven't flown in a week or two, the sump is probably full and you have more oil than you think.
The oil pump works both ways. Since the "out" side has less resistance than the "in" side, running the engine at high RPM drains the sump. One of the reasons to run the engine up for a bit after you taxi in is to drain the sump.
To recap: Excess oil gets turned to foam, and since the oil temp gauge isn't designed to read "foam temperature" you'll see a drop in oil temp... it dropped from 50C to 20C in about 5 minutes on me. Since foam compresses, the oil pressure will drop from the usual ~6 Kg/cm2 to ~4.5 Kg/cm2 in the same 5 minutes. This was about 20 minutes into a flight at cruise.
I drained the oil, washed the screen and didn't find any metal... so it appears that I've dodged the proverbial bullet.
And speaking of which, and since the Yak-List guys are the most awesomest, I will also share my super-secret trick for finding inexpensive ammo, something I also learned this week.
If you install the Wal*Mart App on your smart phone, you have access to the world's largest and best real-time inventory control system. If you search for 22LR or 9mm, then "check availability" you will get a list of all the stores within 20 miles and what they've got Right Now. Most of these will say "Out of Stock" but if you check at odd times and hustle over when it says "In Stock" ("Low Inventory" doesn't seem to work too well) you've got a real good chance of picking up 3 boxes of what you're looking for. That can be 300 rounds of 9mm , which Doesn't Suck. Always The Low Price - WM hasn't jacked their prices as much as everybody else.
