Hi all, a question for the Canadian RV10 builders. I had a pre cover inspection done yesterday and the inspector stated that seat belts had to be TSO'd. Does anyone know if Vans belts are up to the standard we require in Canada? Vans web site does say the belts meet certification standards, so I would have to assume they are ok with Transport Canada too.
Anyone know for sure?
Thx, Rick

Rick,
TSOd belts come with a certification tag attached to the belt. The belts i received from Vans did not have any documentation. I would check with vans on the cert. documents if they exist.

Hmmm, yeah I will call then today. I was going to order a few things from Vans to send to my sisters when we get to St Louis. Is there anything you need?
While I'm thinking of it, did you buy the rear seat foam from Vans? The front seats obviously have a frame, but I'm assuming the rear seats just have the foam covered and then velcro in place?
Thx, Rick

I purchased my belts from Hooker Harness. They worked well in the 8A so I decided to go with them again.

I just saw an RV8 yesterday, being prepped for DAR inspection. Problem
#1, seat belt hardware in stock rear seat location interfered with flap
operation. Problem #2, front seat belt anchors were too close together
in stock plans location for anyone over 125 lbs and 28 in waist.
Something to ponder long before nearing completion. Fabrication of new
anchors or offsets in last few days causes stress in more ways than one.

I do not remember that being a requirement or even being discussed. I think we have Hooker harnesses in ours, but I don't know if they are TSO'd.

I spoke with Hooker at OSH and could not believe what A..H..'s they were to me. I had not even got my basic question out before they were dismissive and condescending. I did end up ordering a "standard" set of RV-10 rotary release (top of the line) belts from them by phone later. Hooker belts are well made and HEAVY plus quite expensive. When you receive the package (with Rotary release) you cannot believe how heavy 4 full sets weigh. It turned out in the front seat the inner seat adjustment mechanism conflicts with my custom center console making it extremely difficult to adjust. The front outside adjustment mechanism are tucked so far around the side of the seat that adjusting that side is also difficult. In the rear the hard sewn length means that my 19 year old daughter who is very petite (95 Lbs.) cannot be properly restrained because the lap section will not get small enough due the limitations on how short the lap belts will get. Forget about any skinny youth I place back there. Bolsters are a requirement for my configuration in the rear of the -10.
Additionally the Hooker belts are quite stiff and not especially comfortable till you sit many hours strapped in at which point they become acceptable. The vans belts are soft as butter out of the package compared to the Hooker belts.
When I built my 8A I still wanted the rotary release but was not going to patronize Hooker again. Still annoyed at my OSH experience. I went with Crow Enterprise belts. I saw them in another RV and liked them. The rotary release weighs way less than the Hooker buckles but is not like the cheap rotary release units you get on eBay for a few bucks. The buckles function identically to the Hooker units and have a very positive action. The belt straps are closer in feel to the Vans units and are very comfortable right out of the box. Best of all they are on the order of half the price of the Hooker units. I have about 150 hours on my Crow belts and would do it again for both my -10 and 8A if I had the choice.
BTW Crow also makes the "Latch & Link" style buckle which will save you even more weight & complexity. These are the same buckles I had on my racing M6 BMW from Simpson. They also work very well and are simple design.

Good luck,
Robin
