Hi All,
I think I may have suffered the dreaded hydraulic lock! My Nanchang had sat idle for about 4 or 5 months. Before attempting to start it I pulled the lower plugs (front ones only), got a fair bit of oil out and pulled through about 12 to 15 blades. When I tried to start her the prop turned about a half dozen times with a bit of smoke and a bang as it started to fire then abruptly stopped. Checked the prop and it was locked solid. Fearing the worst I pulled all the front plugs and intake drains but I was surprised that no oil came out. Also the prop was still locked in position, I had assumed once the plugs were out the lock would release. Can anyone tell me, does this sound like hydraulic lock? How come no oil came out after and why is it still locked up with the plugs out?
Also if it is a hydraulic lock is the motor repairable or throw it away?

Thanks for any ideas or info.

Mark

I would be almost certain that it is locked because a connecting rod bent;
the piston moved further up the cylinder and the oil control ring jumped
out, and it is now preventing the piston going back down the cylinder.

Sorry, so not good news. But, the motor is repairable, but should be very
carefully checked in case there has been a major strain on some component.

Hi Richard,

If it is a bent rod as you've suggested, what work is required to repair the likely damage?

Thanks

Richard, do you think this problem has been caused by the lack of use for 4-5 months or is this just a coincedence. If Mark has pulled thru and pulled plugs, what more should be done?

Unfortunately, I think a number of people would remove the cylinder in
question, and confirm that what I have suggested is correct; remove a couple
of other cylinders which will give you access to the crankcase; remove the
bent rod, which you can do unless it is the master rod; replace the rod and,
probably, piston and reassemble.

My personal view is that a hydraulic lock imposes quite significant strains
on the crankshaft and possibly crankcase, and I personally would want to see
the crankshaft and case being removed; x-rayed/crack tested; check that it
is completely "true" it is of course only pressed together; carefully
check that none of the other cylinders were affected, and then, very
importantly, make sure that the new piston and connecting rod weigh within
half a gram of the others.

The longer you leave the engine, the greater amount of oil is likely to migrate down from the tank. Also, I noted that he only pulled one lot of plugs; you can get oil in the intake tubes (but more likely with a tail – wheel aircraft); you can have oil stuck in the bottom of the inverted piston etc. After that length of time, I would turn it through at least 50/60 blades with the plugs removed. Also, it is a very good practice to make a note of the oil level on shutting down, and leave that in the aircraft. When you come back, you will then know how much oil has gone into the engine!

Thanks for all the info Richard, its much appreciated. Is there an easy way to tell which piston is the problem? Also how do you think it would compare price wise between doing the work you have suggested and replacing the engine.
Anyone know the going price for a replacement HS-6A?

Typically not a master rod. But definitely could be a bent link rod in probably #5 or #6 cylinder. If the link rod is bent, it will jam up against the sleeve of the cylinder.

Many CJ owners do not install intake drain kits on the Housai engines. Most likely because the Housai engine does not have intake plugs on the #4,5 and 6 cylinders as does the M14 engine. Oil does collect in the intake tubes and it does thicken while it lays in the intake tubes. If a glob of oil gets sucked into the cylinder, it could be enough oil to cause the dreaded hydraulic lock and also cause a link (connecting) rod to bend.

Therefore, one of the ways to help prevent hydraulic lock, besides pulling the plugs and pulling through, is to install an intake drain kit. Leave the intake drain kit open when the aircraft is parked. During the preflight prep, with the intake drain open, pump a few shots of prime and watch for the fuel to eventually run CLEAR out of the intake drain. This helps flush the oil from the intake tubes. Then pull the blades with the intake drain open.

Also, because the airplane sits at a slightly nose high attitude on the ground, it is always recommended to pull the rear spark plugs because the oil typically rests at the rear of the cylinder due to the nose high attitude. Most importantly, pull the rear plugs from 4, 5, and 6. Even #7 can't hurt.

As well as what Richard said. The 5th ring counting from the top of the piston, with the connecting rod bent, on down stroke slipped out of the neck of the cylinder. On up stroke that ring jams on the throat of the cylinder locking the engine.

The YAK maintenance manual calls for this if the engine sits idle for thirty days. "Drive out the intake plugs and spark plugs". They also recommend that if the engine sits longer than five days to pull blades periodically to clear any accumulated oil.

Richard, do you think this problem has been caused by the lack of use for 4-5 months or is this just a coincedence. If Mark has pulled thru and pulled plugs, what more should be done?

Hi Richard,

If it is a bent rod as you've suggested, what work is required to repair the likely damage?

Thanks

Well guys, We parked our DC3 last October and carefully installed drip pans. In March when it was time to get her going again, we removed all the bottom plugs pulled her through then started it up without the bottom plugs installed. Ran funny and shot a lot of oil across the ramp, but no hydro-lock. I learned this trick from some ”Old Timers”  (as I am approaching 70 myself, that means anyone who is older than me!)

Hi Dennis;

The Huosai does indeed have intake drain plugs on 4, 5 & 6. These are identical to the ones on the EARLY M14P with one major exception. The plug bosses on the Huosai intake pipes are welded directly to the pipe with no re-inforcing doubler as you will find on the M14P.

As a result the addition of a drain system introduces the possibility of cracking around the boss unless the pipes are modified to the same standard as the M14P.

Cheers;
Walt

Dennis

Ahhh....learn something new every day. The reason I said what I did was
because of the many CJ's I have seen, very rarely was there any intake
drains installed. Now I understand why.

There is an ad on Barnstormers.com for a HS-6A engineand exhaust for $3,500. If I were you I'd jump on that right away, youwon't find a better deal. I had basically the same thing happento me a few months ago. I'm still dealing with it.

Thanks for all the info Richard, its much appreciated. Is there an easy way to tell which piston is the problem? Also how do you think it would compare price wise between doing the work you have suggested and replacing the engine.
Anyone know the going price for a replacement HS-6A?

The M-14 Engine has slightly different "stroke" lengths, and I would
guess so would the Housai. You cannot rely on that method all the time.
Just sayin. It sounds good in theory, and with a V-8 Chevy it would
work. Not so this engine.
