I know that you were suggesting additional oil cooling by having the filter at the front of the engine. I was only making the point that the additional cooling effect will be very small, simply because cooling is proportional to the surface area of the cooler, and the surface area of a standard filter is extremely small compared to the total exposed surface area of an oil cooler!

I agree with Richard. Also putting the filter forward of the cylinders may very well interfere with the normal air flow for cylinder cooling and might cause a "hot spot" not good for a cylinder.

I've stretch my memory banks, I don't believe I've ever seen that setup on any airplane. I've seen prop governors and mags ahead of cylinders (necessity of design?) but never any cooling apparatus.

Thanks Pappy , this was one of my grey areas where air flow would be compromised. However the air flow should bend and follow the cannister some what.  My bracket is  not finished yet and I am going to make a new one  using 3 holes and some tri - angulation  to stop flex. In addition to this I was thinking of making a ring clamp  and using the stud on the cylinder head to secure the filter cartridge.

I would also be concerned with the blockage of air flow to the front of the cylinders with the disruption of flow to the baffles for #4 & 5. Since the cooling occurs as a result of the pressure differential between the front of the cylinder and at the exit from the narrow opening at the rear of the cylinder formed by the baffles. If you have the capability of monitoring the CHT on those two cylinders. So says the NACCA studies from the 1930's that looked at the most efficient baffles for cooling the cylinders.
