Hello all 582 Pulsar flyers
Is anyone experienced replacing the original gray head 582 with the 99 mod blue head ?
I am returning my Pulsar 582 to flight status and have a new in box bluehead.
The new coolant plumbing looks taller and may foul the top cowling.
The missing info includes
1- will the blue head 582 fit under the cowling ?
2- what brand and model radiators to used on the 582 Pulsar?
3- any experience with HAC carburetor upgrade
4- comments on the IVO inflight adjustable
Any help is appreciated................Clark

Wow! I can’t believe you are actually going to do it, Clark. Or at least contemplating it.

Clark,
I had my gray head 582 replaced with a blue head 582 back in 2006.
The Rotax mechanic that did the work had to find different rubber mounts to get it aligned exactly to the same prop center (very minimal fraction of an inch). But note, we also changed from a B gear box to a C gear box so that may have influenced the alignment. The only other issue was the the way Rotax routed the spark plug wiring. The very front plug cap hit the cowling until it was repositioned swept back. Hoses and thermostat cleared without an issue.
Best regards,
Ron

Thanks Ron
I am encouraged.
Just a few more ques.
1- why did you swap from B to C box ?
2- What prop did you choose
3- are you near southern California ?
BTW : I still have the metal jacket plug cap. It is lower profile than the brown plastic ones and helped with the cowling clearance.
Thanks for the help ..................Clark

Hi Ray
Yes yes
Pulsar is in my garage
New blue head 582 is nested in the cowl.
Now I am working on reworking the cooling circuit, install IVO IFA , renew the battery, repair hanger rash update ELT , rebuild carbs and fuel pump.
There are lots of other details that will need attention so I will be a bit.
I am driven by the memory of delicate touch downs at remote air fields.
Wish me persistence ........................Clark

Hi Clark, just put a new blue head in my Pulsar. The top coolant return hose can be moved to the side by drilling a small hole in the aluminum capacity charge mount and using a pull tie through the hole, around the coolant hose and back. This moves it enough to clear the cowling.

Thanks for the input George.
I will do as you suggest.
It looks like I have a few other items to tend to.
Can you help with any of these items ?
1- will have to shift the rotary valve oil reservoir aft .
I have a longer hose set and will make an extension off the ignition mount plate
2- my radiators and cooling line are long lost.
I just ordered 2 heater cores ( radiators) for an 82 Ford ( I wish I knew the exact part Mark Brown used ).
They will need new fitting attached.
I could use some detail pictures of radiator fittings and ..... the coolant fill tube with radiator cap.
3- I plan to fit the IVO 3 blade IFA I purchased years back. ( The Perry is damaged beyond repair)
The rebuilt B box has the 2.6 gear set. It will be nice to avoid the RPM drop on the TO roll.
Do you have and comments.
4- The Bing carbs currently have the threaded needles with mixture adjust knobs in the cockpit.
Pretty effective but lots of fiddling in flight. I have a early HAC carb retrofit kit . I am pondering weather to
a- install the HAC alone
b- in combination with the threaded needles set up
5- My Pulsar last flew 6 years back. It used premix Amsoil ( 100 to 1) with avgas.
I remember that ring remained free and I replaced plugs every 50 hrs as a precaution .
How does that sound to you ?
BTW: is the engine any smoother with the - HYDRO damper that Rotax installed on the Bluehead ?
Thanks for any help ...............Clark - soon to fly - Foster

I converted my new blue top to grey top mode when I fitted it by blanking off the two ports where the bi-pass hose would normally fit.
The original builder/owner of my plane did not fit the thermostat but instead installed in-flight adjustable louvers on the starboard radiator, so that temperatures can be adjusted by the pilot. I have retained this feature with the new engine - it provides improved maximum cooling (no thermostat to reduce coolant flow) and may also reduce the risk of cold seizure (radiators are always live so there is no risk of a slug of ice cold water entering the engine from cold rads if the thermostat were to open suddenly).
Whilst I was installing the new engine I also fitted coolant powered carb heaters, and replaced the coolant overflow bottle with a car pressurized expansion chamber. Since doing this my coolant system has remained totally free of any air bubbles (25 hours).

George, sorry for the delay in replying. I had to take some photos of the louvers -see pictures on the Picasa link at the bottom of this message. The guy who built the plane and fitted the louvers operated them by a bicycle type bowden tension cable that puuled them open against an automatic return spring. It worked well but he used a rotating knob on a screw-thread to pull the cable and this took minutes to wind all the way in. A 4 stage lever (like the original Pulsar flap lever but much smaller would have been better.
I replaced the cable with a small geared electric motor driving a worn and worm-wheel and micro switched to limit the travel and give feedback when fully open and shut. It takes about 10 seconds to move from open to shut and works well. But is a bit OTT unless you want to operate the louvers automatically from a water temperature sensor (in my "to do" list).
The port radiator does not have adjustable flaps but is sometimes masked according to ambient temperature - fully masked below freezing, fully unmasked above 28 degs C and part masked anywhere in between.
Although they work well the louvers would be difficult to make. A simpler arrangement would be to make a "roller door" type blind operating sideways and with the slats constructed from aluminium piano hinges. This is also in my "to do" list for the port radiator.
I've also included a few general pictures of the engine showing the expansion bottle and the oil injection tank.

I had a Volvo in the '50's it had a roller blind that pulled up infront of
the radiator and sprung loaded to retract it.

Bob, thanks for the response. That is really a sophisticated set up. I guess once you get it to operate automatically from the water temp it will be pretty slick. The roller door is a good alternative and less complex. I was also thinking of installing an automotive heater control valve to adjust the water flow through the radiators using a push/pull cable.
Thanks for the details and the pictures.

Hello 582 operators
It may be is easier to shut of the coolant line instead of the air flowing thru the radiator.
I installed a valve in one of the 5/8 coolant lines between the radiators. It is operated via push/pull cable.
Works great as I can ramp down the coolant flow to the rt radiator. The cabin heater works great as it routes the heated air from the still operating left radiator.
Real simple to install too.........Clark

I was going to try coolant control too but worried about the slug of cold water in the isolated radiator suddenly cooling the motor. Thought it was better to bottle up the heat in the whole system.
