Hello Kolbers,
I am wondering if anyone has mounted a light on the trailing edge or top of the Rudder? If so how did you do it, and how did it work out?
Thanks,

Never did it, but ill recommend you go with the top mount as the trailing edge mount would increase the chance of flutter.

Well, Cessna mounted a light on the rudder trailing edge; but please remember that if you do, you are adding mass in the WRONG DIRECTION that will increase the chance of FLUTTER. Not Recommended.
My vote is for mounting on top of the vertical stabilizer.

My MKIII needed a counterbalance to stop the rudder flutter, probably due to the addition of a light. If I had it to do over again, I would have mounted one on each wing tip instead. Here are the pictures and description of the light and counterbalance:

When Cessna mounted a light on the trailing edge of the rudder, you can bet they BALANCED the rudder -- so it wouldn't flutter.
They recommend that even when you repaint a control surface, you re-balance to compensate for this very slight weight difference.
This is important, even at the low speeds of a Kolb. Flutter can destroy a control surface in a couple of seconds.

Does anyone have a picture of a Cessna with a light mounted as described?

Rick, my Cessna 170 had such a light, factory-mounted as original equipment. If you can find a 170 anywhere (at least the B model) I think you'll see that light. I no longer have that aircraft so can't send you a pic.do not archive

Got a 170 we are restoring but the rudder is at my buddy's garage, looks a lot like Rev Pikes only made with corrugated aluminum.

This is probably the worst mistake I have made in a long time. For several years I had a bad case of airplane lust for a 170B. I fear it has been reawakened after 10 minutes of looking at pictures of that beautiful aircraft.

Rick, I wouldn't worry about it now. Undoubtedly after all these years you lost that familiarity of the "old airplane" smell, the one where when you first get in it they have the "aluminum/slight gas" smell, with the slightest hint of
oil in the air. I'm sure gone, too, is the rocking feeling as you adjust to get a comfortable position in the seat, and you stare at
the gauges and the control and remember how much fun they were to fly. Damn it. Now I want one, too.

It isn't necessary to have relatives in Kansas City in order to be unhappy.

if I remember... the regs say that the light should be mounted on the most rear part of the air craft... that way the light can be seen from any angle with out being blanked out.
if you don’t want to add the chance of flutter... make a bracket for the light and mount it to the forward part of the tail wheel support rod where vibration would be at a minimum.

Well, Cessna mounted a light on the rudder trailing edge; but please remember that if you do, you are adding mass in the WRONG DIRECTION that will increase the chance of FLUTTER. Not Recommended.
My vote is for mounting on top of the vertical stabilizer.

All the 170s must have had the rudder light as ours is an original 1948 ragwing.
