What paint finish and manufacturer have others found successful?

I am thinking mid grey for the main fibreglass and a lighter grey for the aluminium sub-panels (factory-supplied). Anodising turns out brown on this alloy, otherwise I'd have done that.

I hear that satin is a good finish (gloss is too reflective and matt gathers dust and greasy fingermarks, so soon looks patchy and ugly - a bit like me...)

Obviously I need a UV-resistant paint and Plasti-kote make a good range, their Super being well-recommended. Only problem is they do a light grey satin and a black satin... the only mid grey is gloss or matt.

Have others found any problem with black as a main panel colour, or with matt as a finish texture?

So, choices.... the best finish (satin) in the "wrong" colour (black) or the best colour (grey) on the "wrong" finish (matt)?

Grateful for any answers.

Photo of panel so far, if it helps to picture the problem...

Hi Paul,

Your considerations are all spot on. Let me add another - heat absorption.
Unless you live in Scotland, if you use a very dark color like black, the inside of your panel will get quite toasty. Consider an active ventilation system to protect those fine electrical gadgets!

Hi

I have just recently painted my panel with rust-oleum textured spray paint and covered the aluminium sub panels with a carbon fibre wrap.

I have attached a couple of pictures showing my panel.

Kind regards

Hi!
Colour chart here:- Mine was actually Cobalt Blue.:-
www.goldburnfinishers.co.uk/
Also:- www.accoatings.co.uk/ýwho are in Birmingham ( I think they were the
outfit that "supplied only" my paint, although I had them near Leicester in
my mind. .....Long time ago ! The Paint is actually known as Nextel Suade
Paint and that is the key to ensure no reflection on the windows for
photographic work.

If I recall, the Nextel Suede is the standard finish in Boeing Air Transport class aircraft. And if you can find it retail it will have a matching price, i.e., the sky is the limit!

Thanks to all for the useful input. Nextel is emerging as a clear favourite.

I have, however, heard it can attract greasy fingermarks - can anybody who has been flying behind it for any length of time (Bob H?) confirm or deny? Or any general reports on serviceability? Apologies to those who have applied Nextel and not yet flown...!

The bad news is it is £47.81 for 1 litre (covers 5 sqm), plus primer at £21.87 and thinner at £9.45 for 1 litre, plus £30 carriage (all + VAT!) Anybody fancy going halves on all of the above in Nextel's light grey? http://www.goldburnfinishers.co.uk/nextel_chart.php

Or, better yet, anybody got 1/2 a litre of light grey (or near offer) plus primer & thinners for sale to a good home?

Best,

Hi! I think there probably isn't many more people with greasy fingers than
me ! With Cobalt Blue no Problem anyway !
Also have done some modifications with a brush ...still no problems and a
good texture colour to match too! Get a check price from the
Birmingham/Leicester people but hey ...you can't take it with you !

Hey Paul,

I have about 0.5l of the grey and more importantly a qty of liquid hardener and some thinners - see pic

The tricky bit is how to get it to you as being solvent based paint the RM are cagey about posting it.

Any good to you?

PS; the UK supplier at the time was Mankiewicz UK in Leicester:
Unit 26, Ashville Way, Whetstone, LE8 6NU 0116 284 7780.

Not sure if they are still around but if you prefer a different colour from the 'anthacite' I have, its worth trying to call them.

I can recommend it - looks good, does not seem to show any fingermarks, and does not reflect sunlight in the air.

A pic of my panel attached btw

Clive

I'm intrigued ...... I contacted Goldburn about a month ago and they told me they could not supply Nextel for me to use, but would paint the panel in Nextel for £380 + VAT .....!!!

I would far prefer to buy the items listed by Paul below to use myself rather than pay nearly £500 for them to do it .....!!!

Anyone got a strategy .......... or a few cans of Nextel, thinners, etc. please?

You could save yourself a lot of money by spraying the panel with ordinary
gloss spray paint of your colour choice and then rubbing down very lightly
and spraying with a clear satin varnish. I did this on my panel and it is
still perfect after 6 years. Total cost about £20.

I say Amen to that...there are plenty of others ways for me to spend $500...but to each his own...
