Looks good. Do you think the strut mount being white will show rust more than black? Figuring that if it is removed every annual, it will get scratched up a bit from the nuts and bolts being removed and reinstalled?
Did you require it as well, or is that the old harness?

If my "strut mount" were painted on the inside then the strut would NOT fit into it. It's that close. AS I Recall, The maintenance manual says to spray it with zinc chromate and assemble wet...
Whoever wrote that never took one apart.....
I'm lucky with WD40 or thread lube or silicone spray on the raw metal.....

Your right about the painting the inside, I was just referring to the outside. The white is such high contrast that it will look worn because the surface rust will show more than if it was black. The paint will be damaged the first time the strut is serviced. Everything is so clean and new looking, that it would be a shame to see the rust around the bolts after the strut is serviced. It's good to see another clean firewall on an old plane.

None a that shows outside the cowl.
Mine's white as a cracka and I see no rusty spots;)
But I have repainted it once since I bought it.
It's really really really hard steel and that gives you some time to fix it if before it goes beyond the surface if you see it rusten
I had an occasion to try and straighten out the factory bend once.
I think it was about 20 tons we put on the strut. We drew an outline on the floor before and placed the strut back into the outline after pressing it. We gained no visible change....
Anyway, Gary shoots the real Emron and its also really really hard so it probably ain't chipping off....it sure was hard sanding that Emron off the inside of my Jag owl...

Kevin,
If you are referring to the tube the nose strut goes into, there is a bracket over it that holds the shocks. I had that powder coated. Plus, I'm not a big believer in removing the strut each year. On planes parked near the coast, I remove them every 4 years. On planes parked on the desert, every 7 or 8 years is plenty. Removing the strut every year would cause more damage than necessary and serves no real purpose.

Regarding any rust:
It would be virtually impossible for the surface of any of this to rust. It was stripped, sanded, etched with rust converter, stripped and sanded again, painted with DuPont 22860 etch primer, painted with Dupont V-2910 direct to metal epoxy primer, then painted with Imron.

I pull the nose strut when I start getting a lot of nicks and scratches on the strut. This is somewhere every 2 - 4 years. I strip and repaint the strut. I clean and tape off the part that goes into the receptacle for the nose torque tube. I made the mistake of trying to paint the entire strut the only first time. I reassemble with LPS-3 and a silicon bead seal. Never had a corrosion issue, or have trouble getting it apart.

If you paint it with a polyurethane paint, it's good for 10+ years.

You are correct Ned:-
Years ago when I did my first nose strut R&R I bead blasted the strut and then gave it a primer coat of zinc chromate (it was available then) all over. I masked off the insertion portion and painted the top coat. When I went to install the strut it would NOT fit. Just think, that little bit of primer - What, 0.003 to 0.005" per side (0.006 to 0.010" diameter increase) was enough to prevent the sliding tight fit required. Add to that the extra Wet zinc chromate required for the install... Just would not fit. And if it did begin to fit, the sliding action would wipe off the wet coat. Sort of a `defeative` action.
Kevin, I agree with Gary, there is no need to remove the nose strut every year. Following the Maintenance Manual and 'Suggested' Annual Inspection List is a great idea. But, just like you have to be smarter than a GPS (Woman drives car into lake. GPS made me do it.) You have to be smarter than a Annual Inspection List. Always remember that the Annual Inspection List was created by a person sitting behind a desk and did not have the years of practical history in seeing the condition of nose struts that were NEVER removed in 10, 15, 20 and maybe 30 years. The strut was never removed on my plane prior to me owning it. I felt it just had to be done, at least once in its life. Upon removal there was not a speck of rust. Yes, I have removed it again since the first time - About 8 years between and guess what! Still No Rust! History has a way of repeating itself, sometimes for the better.. Sometimes!

Yes, I get the remove as needed. My comment was more about the color than anything. Most every white strut I've seen that is not freshly painted has nicks and chips that show up as rust marks on the high contrast white. While these same nicks and chips are present on the black struts I've seen, they do not stand out nearly as much and therefore don't detract from the appearance as much. Not a big deal, but I feel the plane looks cleaner without the rust chips being so obvious. Any color is fine if the owner likes it.

Nose strut fit.
I use a direct to metal epoxy primer. Sticks like crazy. Then, I use 220 sand paper and sand to fit. Quite often, it's sanded down to where I can see through the paint. Not always.

Kevin, I agree with Gary, there is no need to remove the nose strut every year. Following the Maintenance Manual and 'Suggested' Annual Inspection List is a great idea. But, just like you have to be smarter than a GPS (Woman drives car into lake. GPS made me do it.) You have to be smarter than a Annual Inspection List. Always remember that the Annual Inspection List was created by a person sitting behind a desk and did not have the years of practical history in seeing the condition of nose struts that were NEVER removed in 10, 15, 20 and maybe 30 years. The strut was never removed on my plane prior to me owning it. I felt it just had to be done, at least once in its life. Upon removal there was not a speck of rust. Yes, I have removed it again since the first time - About 8 years between and guess what! Still No Rust! History has a way of repeating itself, sometimes for the better... Sometimes!

In 1985, when I was 'fixing up' my first Cheetah, I painted the nose strut with Black Durathane. DU9000. My thought was, since the main gear fairings are black, why not the strut as well? Been painting with that same gallon of DU9000 since. I'm down to may last 1/2 quart.

Yes, I get the remove as needed. My comment was more about the color than anything. Most every white strut I've seen that is not freshly painted has nicks and chips that show up as rust marks on the high contrast white. While these same nicks and chips are present on the black struts I've seen, they do not stand out nearly as much and therefore don't detract from the appearance as much. Not a big deal, but I feel the plane looks cleaner without the rust chips being so obvious. Any color is fine if the owner likes it.

Your right about the painting the inside, I was just referring to the outside. The white is such high contrast that it will look worn because the surface rust will show more than if it was black. The paint will be damaged the first time the strut is serviced. Everything is so clean and new looking, that it would be a shame to see the rust around the bolts after the strut is serviced. It's good to see another clean firewall on an old plane.

Painting itself is easy. It's the preparation that takes forever.
I did the same preparation on the 'inside' of my plane.
