Over the last 18 months the port wing of my Classic has developed a dozen or so blisters on the upper surface. None of them are huge (most 1-2 cm with a max  of 3 cm) and my inspector is confident there is no structural problem. The aircraft was completed in 1998, has always been kept in a well ventilated hangar and far as I can ascertain this problem has not occurred previously, so it is a bit of a mystery why this has happened now. 



I want to rectify this problem but I have no build experience and would greatly appreciate advice on the correct procedures, techniques and materials required to remove these blisters and restore the wing to its original condition.

Hi Gordon, I have a similar problem and I' assured by Roger Targett that it is not uncommon on glass a/c and on many gliders.  The problem is apparently related to moisture (perhaps from humidity levels at the time of surface preparation) being sealed under the surface at the time of painting.  So the remedy would seem to be re-finishing of the affected areas - which I'm considering.  It is NOT due (as I've seen some assert) to osmosis - which is seen in fibeglass boats where surfaces are under constant pressure and contact with water and in part due to the peculiarities of the resins systems used in boats (see previous post by Nev).  Its cosmetic, but unsightly and probably another £1000-to-fix job . . .

it probably IS due to osmosis, (imho) try puncturing a bubble, if you get a dark brown

drop of liquid that would be it. We have to accept that paint is not waterproof. 

If there is contamination on the surface before painting, water vapour will migrate through the paint 

by nudging a water molecule off the end of a long chain molecule. One -OH will attach at the surface and 

one will drop off the other end to dissolve the offending contamination. The comtaminant signals via the 

chain molecule that it wants water and osmosis does the rest.

Some waterproof breathable cloth is made this way, like Goretex but at a molecular level. 

In that sutuation body heat creates the vapour inside the garment which drives the water out where it condenses

and goes away with the rain. This is why Goretex is no good on a hot  day, heat drives the water inwards.

btw I won't argue with Roger but I will discuss with him.

I have a couple of small blisters, its only a couple of years old and kept inside and as I painted it and from where they are I suspect it being the last minute surface 'magic' filler I used probably hadn't gone off sufficiently before I coated it.

There was a thread about this about 8 months ago.  I had blistering on the tail surfaces of my classic, after fitting covers.  I understand that if these get wet, and stay wet, there is every chance of blistering.  Glider people apparently know about this, if storing wings in damp suspension slings, where the blistering is in the wing surface matching the suspension areas.

Thanks to all for your replies on this topic and it is interesting to know I am not alone! However, I was really hoping for guidance regarding how to rectify the problem as I want to be sure any work I do does not effect the structural integrity of the wing.

Gordon, I havn't seen a solution to this.  On mine, it is only a couple of blisters on tail surfaces, I have just left them.  Might suggest you contact Roger Targett in Gloucestershire, he is the expert on this sort of thing. Best Richard

When I first built mine I had a couple blisters in the flaps after it was painted. I made two small holes, one in the top and one in the bottom of the blister. After leaving it to evaporate anything that was inside, I squeezed epoxy in the bottom hole until it came out the top then covered the area with plastic sheet and clamped it down with a block. After touching up the surface haven't had a problem for 8 years now.
