With all the great posts over the past three or four days, I developed the courage to bring up something that is troubling me flying wise.

I have lost significant hearing - to the point that air to air or air to ground communication is impossible without some significant help. I use hearing aids and have hard wired the audio from the radio to the receiver/controller I wear around my neck. I talks to the hearing aids through Blue Tooth. It helps a lot when it works. I thought I lost my radio on the trip to Desert Fox Squadron last March and seriously wonder now if it was the radio or the hard wiring to the thing around my neck.

Does anyone else have this problem and if so what have you done to mitigate it?

I also have hearing lose. You may have already done this but breaking the piggy bank and buying an active noise reduction head set helped the most. Dave,
That would be a dream come true. but then I have to mention an experience while test flying the new airplane out of Lincoln Harder, North of Sacramento. I would always fly the test flights over the rice and tomato fields because of the flat and test friendly ground below. Then on return I would fly East for a bit past the airport so I could make a standard approach to 15, reporting over the sawmill. One day on the way to my entry, after hearing all the muffled gibberish (to me) radio calls, I heard this - "Citation ??????? Approaching Lincoln Harder, 15 miles out on a straight in for runway 15". This was crisp and clear. No question who or what or where. I couldn't believe it. It sort of surprised me to learn that much of my problem is that my ears won't clean up what is in reality typically very poor transmissions. That Citation had good avionics and was professionally maintained. Most of the rest of us just hope for the best.

Too many chainsaws and helicopters in my life have ruined my ears. I broke down and got hearing aids this year. The guy said I have moderate hearing loss in the frequency where children's voices are and sever loss in the frequency where women's voices are.

There's been some pretty good advances in hearing aids the past few years. He programed them on a computer to match my hearing loss. I can now hear things I haven't heard for a ling time...like birds chirping.

I haven't worn them in the kitfox yet. Mine is very noisey. I have a good ANR headset and my KX99 is very clear. My problem is there is a college flight program here and those kids talk so darn fast.

If the other plane has a clear transmission and talks normal I can under stand them. If too fast or a crappie radio I can't.

Lowell, Murle Williams has a similar device, you might want to chat with him about his experiences.

Digital datalink is available for many larger airplanes and allows just that (albeit, not using a phone, per se). It hasn't tickled down to us little guys yet, though...

It did give me a good excuse for not hearing her sometimes. Now she just says, "Do you have your earwigs in?"

Tom,
I was at Sams Club having a gourmet hot dog and I am sure folks wondered
what I was laughing about. It put a smile on my face until I had to start
the Honey Dos at Target. "Earwigs" is classic. My wife just says, "Are
your ears in"? I have learned to put them in as soon as I wake up in the
morning to avoid watching her mouth move then look at me expectantly. My
wife is in Orlando keeping warm.

Mike,
In the perfect world, I would like to see voice recognition that would show the spoken words as text on a screen. Something like the voice capable GPSs. I would like to talk, but receive in text. I guess if there were dialogue sequences that could be clicked on it would help, as I don't type very well either.

Howdy All,

Just passing this along in hopes that it may benefit someone.

I also had hearing loss similar to what many of you have described.

Then I had a tooth extracted due to a long-term (years) low-grade infection
in the root.
With the extraction, a prescription for an antibiotic was written. Standard
procedure.

Within days, my hearing returned.
Why? The long-term lingering infection at my tooth root had also spread to
my sinuses.
This infection was causing my hearing degradation.

I hope someone out there has an infected tooth causing a similar problem.
Very easy to fix.

Michael
