Smokey, Merry Christmas!  Still getting my Rocket up to speed; plan to 

actually fly it shortly after the new year.  I have been meaning to ask you 

about aerobatics in the Rocket---especially spins.  Do you have any words to 

the wise?

Hi Randy!



Yes sir, I've spun my HR2 many times. 



Depending on configuration and fuel load, most Harmon Rockets I have flown are nose heavy, compared to a light nose RV4 or my RVX. Therefore spin entry and characteristics are very straightforward. My normal entry consisted of a level flight slow reduction in power while simultaneously increasing pitch back pressure where idle power was reached just above clean wing stall speed. (My Rocket has a very heavy nose approaching stall requiring full aft stick with the stock RV4 Emp to maintain a level pitch.) Full stall is characterized by a light tail /wing buffet and nose pitching down slightly. You can actually apply full power at this point and hold full aft stick and it will buck and pitch but hold altitude in the stall! The cylinders and oil temp will eventually heat up but an amazing capability, very similar to the F16.

Spin entry requires idle power, full aft stick and full rudder deflection at stall  which causes a fairly nose low entry followed by rotation, approx 1.5 turns/sec. Aileron into the direction of spin greatly increases the spin rotation speed. Recovery is also very straightforward. Neutralize aft stick to slightly pitch down while simultaneously  applying opposite rudder will stop rotation in approximate 1-2 turns. Other Rocket aerobatics are equally energetic and straightforward.

PS:  If I still owned it I would have lightened the nose and airframe significantly with a Catto FP 3 blade, minimal avionics and accessories out front, light sump, starter and accessory case alternator, like my RVX!

Is an RVX an RV-10?

I'm negotiating on a Harmon kit, haven't heard of an RVX.

I built a one of a kind airplane from 2 projects. RV4 wings/tail, Rv6 fuselage. Rocket plans used to mate wings.
