Hello Everyone and Happy Hollidays,
I previously promised that the next Lightning Newsletter (and my last one) would be out in December and would cover the October Lightning Homecoming and Fly-In plus a flight test report on the new O-32O 160 HP Lightning. The next issue is pretty much ready to be published except to one thing – the new 60 HP XS Lightning is not quite ready for flight. Due to a very busy schedule and other development delays beyond Arion’s control, and of course the Holidays, the new XS Lightning will now probably fly during the first full week of January 2014.
Remember this is not just another Lightning first flight. It is more like the prototype Lightning’s first flight back in 2006. I’m sure most of you realize this new XS Lightning represents a major change from the existing Lightnings, therefore much additional development work has been required to get it ready for the initial flight. The XS represents a huge change in Arion’s Lightning aircraft line up of products, so it’s initial flight requires extra caution and numerous systems checks to insure a successful first flight. Obviously everything firewall forward it totally different, to include a new cowling and air cooling system, new oil and fuel systems, as well as new landing gear and cockpit engine controls. The entire Lightning crew, Nick, Mark, Mike and Jason, have worked tirelessly to make this a successful new Lightning aircraft, so to rush the first flight at this time would be counterproductive. I’m sure everyone agrees.
As Nick said in his last email update on the XS, “Look for a flight review and Sebring LSA expo report in the next news letter.” The key words being flight review; not just a report that the first flight has been completed – that will be reported in an email. Like the complete flight test report that I wrote for the prototype Lightning back in 2006, I plan to do the same for the XS using a flight test plan like we did when we tested new aircraft or weapons in the USAF. Hopefully I’ll be able to get that done prior to Sebring, then my plans are to be at Sebring with the Arion crew to help where I can. I really enjoyed flying the LS-1 in the demonstration pattern last year.
At this time, my expectation is to have the next Lightning Newsletter published by late January 2014. Later than we planned, but it should bring everyone up to date through the upcoming Sebring Light Sport Expo that is scheduled from 16 – 19 January. I hope to see many of the Lightning community at Sebring. It is a fun fly-in and gives us pilots that live further north a chance to defrost and hopefully enjoy some Florida sun before Sun-N-Fun. See you there.
Blue Skies & Merry Christmas,
Buz Rich

Buz,
You are so very right that rushing the first flight for 320XS would be counterproductive. A good and safe flight is what I am sure everyone is hopeing for. I will be seeing you all at Sebring, likely only on Saturday. If you need some assistance, I will help out with the newsletter since I have already volunteered to take it over after this next one. I have one more semester left to complete my Master's of Science in Aviation - Aviation Safety from Florida Tech. So, I will complete the degree in early May of 2014.
My jet is almost ready to get back in the air and I hope to fly it to Sebring. The electronics were powered up again this past week and everything seems to be working sans a broken autopilot disconnect switch. I already have a replacement and will be doing the Dynon calibrations tomorrow and Tuesday, then connecting up the fuel lines and getting the engine started again after a long time sitting in the hangar. I think one of the first articles I will write will be the saga of replacing the center carry through spar section all by yourself.
It will be great to see you and the rest of the Arion crew in Sebring in a couple of weeks.

Hi folks, talk of new aircraft reminds me I finally got the permit for my Esqual, unbeknown to me it was issued back in July, the LAA, bless them forgot to mention it and I finally received it a few weeks ago. Sort of took the joy out of it. Was actually within 10 years of kit receipt though!
Thanks again for all the help and encouragement from many people, too many to mention but you know who you are, I am humbled by the assistance. Not flown the plane though as currently 1/2 way round the world on our round the world trip.
In a Technam P2008 in New Zealand today went like this ( oh, behind a Rotax)....
Another good day, left New Plymouth and followed West coast up to Raglan, strip on river estuary with small town behind. Bridge over the river had kids jumping off after daring each other. Flight to East coast was at 7500' but eventually at 1000 ' to land at Waihi Beach. Cloud base over sea was solid 800' and cliffs/hills up to 1000. Found a gap to get to coast. Made a few calls and cavok to the North, 20 mind of scud running to blue sky at Whitianga where we are now. House plots available on the airfield....

Clive,
It's amazing sometimes how the wheels of government work. I'm glad you at least now have your permit.
Sounds like you are having a fantastic trip around the world!! Send us a few pics if you can. Have a joyous holiday. Where will you be celebrating New Year's eve?
