Again, I'm not sure how many are interested in this, but here is another update:

The last issue I had with the prep for flight was the pip pin engaging with the bellville washer. I installed the pin and it seemed to be barely engaging the washer, if at all. I could not pull it back. I planned to drill an inspection hole in the wing root faring to put the video snake in to see if the pin head is coming through the fatter spar. I worked on it today and discovered that I can look through the inspection hole to the port fuel tank outlet and see the end of the pip pin. It was fully engaged. I was able to work it back and determine the shim washers to account for the play. Two thick washers did the trick.

The airplane is now ready for flight. If the weather cooperates, tomorrow will be first flight. I will post the results of that flight.

The gut check is that the wing root fairings are mating with the fuselage as they were before - within reasonable limits. It does feel good to have the stronger structure now.

Does anyone know what the speed are supposed to be on the modified airplane? I have 127 knots for Vne from the past, but the website shows 165 knots on the specs - the same as the short wing airplane. I also have 97 knots for maneuvering speed and the top of the green arc. With that speed, normal cruise will be well into the yellow arc. I see around 110 knots IAS in normal cruise. That is at about 28 inches. Rotax 914.

Dave,
I can confirm the current Vne for the UK MG is still 127 knots
indicated, at a max weight of 1370 lb with C of G limits 60.4" to 62.5". I
am still awaiting for all the other limits to be formally specified by the
LAA as part of the Certification process along with the issue of the Permit
to Fly. Europa issued a modified ASI glass with revised colour bandings
that we used during the spinning trial for G-CBHI, but I have not had it
confirmed these are the final approved figures. I may know a bit more when
the LAA return to work next week as I am trying to get an agreed Flight Test
schedule issued.

Ian, did Europa have to change the hex bolts on CS08, both Dave and I feel the need to do so. As you know it is a little easier for Dave with EAA than for us. If the factory felt the need the amendment to Mod 78 would be the simplest route.

The Phoenix has risen from the ashes. Test flight this morning went very well. No issues and no significant changes.

I was able to pull 3.1 Gs. That is quite a bit of pull. This was both in a wind-up turn and a straight ahead pull. I didn't feel the need to go beyond that level. Its quite a dramatic maneuver. Stall characteristics normal. Trim settings unchanged from pre mod 78.

It took a few days less than 3 months to complete this. Too many hours to fathom. I hope there are no more such modification to come in the future. Anything else down the road should seem like a walk in the park compared to this.

I still officially like the change of bolts to flush screws on the CS08 brackets. Piece of mind.
Thanks to Neville and Bud for all their invaluable help.

Alan,
I have not responded because I do not know, having not built it
myself. Can the bolts been seen with the A/C rigged? I am waiting for
paperwork and weather to get the last test flight completed so we can get
the Permit to Fly sorted, so cannot pull the wing off at the moment.

Thanks Ian, no these are the arms behind the spars and in front of the tank, that hold the aileron rods attaching to the self connecting feature. With the hex bolts in they scrape on the right hand spar.
Let us know when flying is to take place, we can visit in G-VKIT.

did the wings bend much at 3 G? Stiffening the spar stubs should help
to give more bend and a slightly softer ride.

[img]cid:ii_1434481ff5b94612[/img]I am so pleased Dave is flying. I set myself a task,over the Christmas holidays, of fitting my newly modified (Mod 7Cool wings on the fuselage for the first time.

Bushes bonded in and cured I moved on swiftly to align the wings only to find the Port wing seeming to be 1" further forward at the reference point than the Starboard wing. This means that the gap for the new front right mount will not even take the mount let alone the layups, the rear right gap is correspondingly too much. The right wing sits really well both bush gaps as expected.

I have tied the wings forward to ensure no rearwards movement of the spars.

I have had my remote camera in to cross check.

I have a grave fear that my port spar has sagged but cannot work out how.

I suppose a shim on the port spar inner bush front face will cure this, can any one think of something else, I have rigged and de rigged 4 times with different helpers.

Hi Alan,
Sounds like the cockpit module might be a touch skewed, doesn't need to be much to throw the wing rigging out.
Easy fix [ done it before] is a shim on the rear face of the seat back, thin piece of steel Reduxed on, clamp it up with a straight edge across the width of the module, so the port spar sits square up to it. Put a couple of CSK rivets in as well, so it can't get knocked off when rigging and fall into the bowels.
This will true out any skew, shim won't need to be much as when the port tip moves aft, the stb tip will move fwd the same amount. A 1/2'' large area washer might even do it ?
This will open the gap between the port lift pin / fuselage, and close the drag pin gap.

Thanks Nev, I was thinking along those lines as the wing definately needs to move reawards at the tip, this could solve both issues
