I'm intending to finish my instrument module in matt black and I wonder if there are any pitfalls or tips I should be aware of.
I'm thinking I'll rub it down with (say) 1000 grit paper then spray it with Halfords best matt-black cellulose can spray. Should I be using a primer first? Do I need to wash off mould release remains with soap & hot water before rubbing down?
Any other advice or warnings welcome.

Rowland, It probably doesn't alter what you might want to
do, but in hot weather the panel absorbs a lot of heat and
cooks the instruments, and ( if you have the sort of
instrument capable of it,)my EFIS sent out distress
signals then closed itself down in the middle of Spain and
this was in spite of me having a panel cooling fan,
blowing air though from above pax feet to emerge below
pilot screen where it doubles as a demister. From this
point of view the least absorbent colour you can get away
with the better.
As far as the releasing agent goes, I strongly
advise washing it off meticulously. I developed a serious
allergic reaction after doing the final rub down of the
fuselage, and the clever medics told me it was almost
certainly the release agent which is notoriously
allergenic!

Rowland, this is the business end of the plane and you and your passengers will be looking at it for the rest of your flying career. I have seen too many panels which grate on the sensibilities and decided to take the cop out route and have it done by a professional car body painter. I know, on this forum we all love showing off what we can do ourselves but in this case the result was so good I can live with the shame and even highly recommend it.
My panel was "splatter" painted which gives a really professional look and is very hard wearing. It is also used to recondition side panels on commercial aircraft so that says something. These guys also know perfectly how to best prepare and prime the panel so there is very little chance of chipping and damage later. I paid EUR 350 all-in which to me is worth every cent given the result.

As far as the colour is concerned I steered away from black, opting for a dark grey mostly because it looks better, but also would be slightly less likely to overheat. Anything lighter and you would start getting problems with glare in the windshield.
