Looks like an extended wing mono! Pity we couldn't fit an
engine like that in place of the 91x. David Joyce, G-XSDJ

Don’t know how many times I’ve seen variations on this program but I never tire of watching it.

30 k feet should also be possible with the 914 Turbo - at least Europa Aircraft Company estimated that value. Here in Germany there was recently a guy going up to 26k ft in a 914-powered Flight Design CTLS for athomsphere Research (vulcano ash). Don't know if I'd feel comfortable at that altitude...

Given James May has his pilot's license, do you think he logged
That flight as "dual" in his log book, I sure would have, got the
Video to prove it too

In fact the 914 works in the fuselage behind the cabin. The propeller is foldable and driven by a power train in the middle tunnel. In sail mode it's completely covered by the nose, best glide angle is 1:50. The Stemme S 10 is really the best fusion of both worlds but it comes also at a price of about three well equipped Europas.

BTW: Service ceiling is 30.000 ft - above the Everest summit.

The waviness in the footage when they were orbiting Everest made me airsick, sitting in my study. Look at the paint job of that a/c.
Not bad doing a 30 degree bank turn at FL300.

It's also still a taildragger and prone to ground loops! I'd still love to have a seat in one!

It also has a track width of only about 1,20 metres and a wing span of 23 meters which won't contribute much to ground handling capabilities neither (probably only slightly better than the U2). The S 10 is pure high tech for the ambitioned glider pilot (I know of one which only has 20 % engine running time and one which has sailed >2000 km in the Mountain waves of the Andes), e. g. the propeller pitch is changed by applying heat to a bi-metal, the wings are foldable for improving hangarage etc.

For an average pilot )* (and average airfield) the trigear S 6 which still has a glide ratio of 36 as the retractable version with 18 m wingspan (or the Europa of course Smile should be enough.

)* edit: speaking only of myself of course Wink
