Folks,
Sadly it looks most likely that 680-FL(P) 1695-35, VH-BTN, is headed for the scrapyard in the sky. It is a  Mr. RPM conversion, IO-720s.

The aircraft has been operated in aerial survey unpressurised for many years, and it has exceeded is Australian fatigue life, and it seems like CASA will not even consider a Special Flight Permit (ferry permit) to fly it outside the country. Under the applicable Australian AD, the life limit is only 11,200 hours, this aircraft has had a number of extensions up to the now ~14,200. Having inspected the aircraft, my guess is that the amount of work to do to put it back on the N register and ferry to US would exceed the market value of the aircraft in its present condition.

I do have a question that somebody might be able to answer.

According to out AD, there was a structural change for the FL and FL(P) from serial #1731, from an external spar strap to an internal spar strap.

The question is, can the pre #1731 original wing be modified to the #1731 and on “internal spar strap” standard?

If so, and economically possible, that would extend the wing life to 30,000 hours, a dramatic change from 11,200.

See:< http://services.casa.gov.au/airworth/airwd/schedules/ad_display.asp?session=1308359129&pc=PC_90830&sched=under&toc=AC> and go to AD/AC/66

Tootle pip‼

Wing can not be modified to the internal strap. How can I get the wing life documentation? I use to have a copy done by Aero Commander but can't find it

Bill,
There was a link to the CASA web site at the bottom of the message, which will bring up all the ADs applicable to all Aero Commanders in AU.
Look down the list to no. 66, open it up, it's a PDF, and there you have it.
If the link doesn't work, go to <www.casa.gov.au>, click on the AD page, click on the "under 5700kg" page, find and click on "Twin Commander", and look for No. 66.
The search function is lousy, entering AD/AC/66 doesn't work, for some strange bureaucratic reason.
Cheers,
Bill Hamilton

There is a corrosion issue for the spar. X-Ray or a visual inspection can allow for an approval. My company did a picture analysis that allowed us to continue flying.

If it can't be modified, could you not change to N-reg and at least get it flown out of there and sold elsewhere?

Folks,
Having seen –BTN at Bankstown YSBK, days before GAM bought it, two of us had considered making an offer, I was surprised that they even got it to a condition where a Special Flight Permit could be issued to ferry it to Essendon.
Cheers,
Bill Hamilton

VH-BTN has been parted out and down to bare airframe only - previous owners would not justify another spar extension mod
