I just did my first 5 solo flights in anything today....well, except
for jumping off the porch as a kid with a pillow case for a 'chute, but
I digress.

Yup, the day finally came, and my instructor got out after we made 4 or
5 practice landings, and asked if I wanted to take it around. I
couldn't get the door closed fast enough behind his departing body. I
made 3 flights around the Napoleon (3NP) grass "complex" and reported
back to him, then made 2 more. Then we flew it back home to my slightly
more tricky field with trees closer in, and I landed there. He wants to
keep me on a day-to-day basis as far as the first few days after
"birth", then he'll give me the go-ahead to venture out and start
learning what flying is all about.

Did I mention that the plane is a Kitfox? And man, that Jabiru 2200
power can really be felt when the 225-pound instructor got out! It
floats a bit more on landing, but sure gets off the ground quick.

that's real cool Cool , I remember when I did my solo in my fox, the instructor called me on the phone and said, I'm going to let you start flying solo, but stay with 3mph winds, well I taxied out and had 7mph winds, I called him and he said, how do you feel, I said great, he said go for it. What a feeling, shot off the runway and the landing, wow, way cool, like you said, floated and did the most beautiful 3 point.

Lynn,
Good thing I voted for your Fox instead of my own at JXN. I understand you won by ONE vote that day! Have your instructor show you how to navigate over to 57D now. It's the same distance to 57D as it was for me to fly to JXN. I was over at Howell with the Fox today. If I'd known you were out soloing, I would have diverted over to watch and listen (and maybe hold that trophy for you).

The two flights I'll never forget are my first solo and the first time I got
my Kitfox in the air. You are so lucky to be able to do both at the same
time! What a great plane to learn on!!

Funny thing about voting for oneself, Rex...I thought about that
practice, and my Dad had told me at one time "if you don't vote for
yourself, who else should vote for you?" I guess I've followed that
thinking since then, always wondering how things would have turned out
if I hadn't voted for my own car, photo, woodworking project, airplane
model, airplane....

I'll tell you what Rex, I'll come over on July 8th, to your fly-in,
and be sure to vote your ticket if you have a contest. : )

I hadn't even put the two together until you just mentioned it,

Thanks, Jimmie....for those that don't know, I bought the unfinished
kit from Jimmie, and he was a little sad when it rolled down the street
on a trailer away from his home. Hope to fly it down your way sometime,
Jimmie, and you can fly "the dream" for yourself.

Where I did my flight training they gave you a shower of cold water from
anything that will hold the water. We call it dousing. I got doused well...
I'm not sure what the symbolism of it is but that is what they did.

When my dad learned to fly they used to cut off your tie. The symbolism was
cutting the ties to mother earth. The day he soloed they spent no time in
cutting his tie.... He came home still wearing his cut off tie and an ear
to ear smile until my mother reminded him that the tie was a pure silk tie
which cost more than $100. in 1961.

What do you mean Oops???

Ah! the tie cutting. I remember when I went to Germany with the air guard, northern part, I think the little town was klopemburg(excuse the spelling), I watched a group of locals congradulate a new pilot by having him on his knees and had his tie on a stump and they went through a ritual of cutting the tie. Very cool to watch.

For me it was a time I will never forget. I soloed at Spokane international during busy time. That was a goal that I wanted. The instructor wasn't to keen on it, but that was what I wanted. He had me doing several low passes, these consisted of landing configuration and staying just off the runway, he said if I could run it centerline the entire 9000 ft. he would concider it. Well I did it and he let me solo, it was way cool. I even had several 737 to play with. Oh, my solo was in a C172.

I tell ya, when I finished I remembered what I saw in Germany, but I didn't get anything, just a great feeling inside of accomplishment.

Finally, CONGRADULATIONS on flying that Fox solo, that alone is quit an accomplishment.

Lynn,

I'd say you are in an exclusive Smile and small Wink group to build and first fly your own Kitfox. I look forward to seeing your big E tail in the sky.
-----------------------------
First flights:

My first solo flight was a few T&Gs at North Perry Airport (Hollywood, FL). While I was doing my first solo flying, the Blue Angels were practicing over Opa Locka (about 6 miles south) for an air show the following weekend. My scan included many glances south. I’ll not forget this most memorable air show.

I’ve been at many FBOs and seen shirt tails tacked to the wall. Where I trained there was no ‘first solo’ tradition, beyond a likely wipe of the brow or palms and possibly a change of underwear. My physical memory stops at very moist palms. Very Happy

Wow!

We never forget that "first one".

Not quite as thrilling in a store bought, nose wheel
plane, but mine had memorable points too. It was 20
below F. Blowing snow and the instructor refused to
lay out on the grass and watch. C-150 (fooey) I had
to open the vents turning base to clear the front
window to land. It frosted over from my breath. Then
I had to close them after takeoff to be able to still
hold the yoke with frozen gloved hands. (fooey yokes)
Found I had to be real slow with the throttle, or the
engine would not accellerate for takeoff. Hit a snow
drift and almost got stuck on the taxiway after the
last landing.

Even then, I yeild to the first solo flight being in
your own Fox. Smile

But no one was going to cut any clothes off me on that
day! I needed every shred to stay warm.

Lynn,

Congratulations on your solo. This is what we call a "good start". We need to
keep remembering all the millenia that humans looked to the birds and sky
thinking covetously about the arerial environment. We live in a great time.
Ask yourself - how many people were flying a hundred years ago. The avearge
person can actually do this now. Some even do so with their own airplane -
better yet.

We each have our solo story; for me, it was a cessna 140 on a grass strip. I
didn't even have a tire blow on my first solo experience - saved that one for
takeoff on the second solo - still don't know why it blew on takeoff instead
of landing - the takeoff wasn't so bad, but apparently the tires were kinda
crappy back in those days when the nose wheels were on the back- actually
thought about the blown tire once in the air for a moment, but decided to
ignore it while landing on the grass and everything went well - lots to be
said for grass. I still like grass. Grass is good. Grass is great.

The proof of your experience will be many future years of safe and fun flying
- fly well so you can take your great grand children with you some day.
Never bust your butt; don't let anyone else bust it for you, and you will
have lots of fun.

Sincerely,

Dave S
