Greetings RV'ers,

On the RV-8, I've got Stewart/Warner 10610R 10 row oil cooler for the IO-390. It's mounted on the rear baffle and its worked well and kept the oil temps in the low 180's under all conditions.

I noticed today, that the outside mounting flange that goes next to the baffle is cracked. I suppose I could get it welded or brazed or whatever they do to aluminium, but that seems like a hack.

Apparently, Chief doesn't carry the Stewart/Warner brand anymore and has to different variants of the Aero Classic brand in the 10 Row 10610R compatible unit.

One is the "Standard" model for $269:

The other is the "HE" (High Efficiency) models are $575:

If you just install another oil cooler .... my gut feeling is that it'll crack too. If it was mine I would have it welded .... you can't braze aluminum .... and figure out why the oil cooler cracked in the first place. My first choice is engine vibration, and the second is stress due to the baffle mounting flange not being flat.

I certainly recommend talking to Pacific Oil Cooler before you make any
decisions. They can give you pricing to repair, and probably have a
source for exact replacement as well.

Matt,
Do you have any photos showing the oil cooler mounted? I'd like to see how you mounted it. Replacing the cooler with the same mounting system will only result in another cracked oil cooler. One of the best solutions is to move the oil cooler off the rear baffle and rubber mount it to the motor mount. A short duct will need to be fashioned. I can supply photos of how this is done. I want to see your mounting photos first.

I had a number of cracks on the baffle metal angle  aluminum bracing the oil cooler mount.  Replaced it with thicker angle and fashioned a diagonal brace for reinforcement.  No issues there for 2 yrs now.

I thought the source of the cracking had been addressed. I had some issues with the left-rear baffle flange cracking too in the beginning. I made the rear baffle nice and strong, but used the stock left-rear piece which was .032. It just wasn't up for the task. I later added a cross strut from the crankcase just ahead of the hoist loop all the way back to the left rear corner and added some .063 angle stiffners over the oil cooler flanges for additional support. I'm wondering if I cracked the flange today taking the oil cooler off. It was pretty stuck on and I was having to do a fair amount of prying to get it to separate from the gasket. I would have been more careful if I'd of realized those flanges are made out of such crappy pot metal. Man, they are soft.

Since I'm rebuilding, I decided to rebuild the left-rear baffle part and was taking the oil cooler off today to accommodate that. That's when I noticed the crack.

Matt did you use steel washers between the flange and the Al tube like I told you to?  If not this is why they cracked. The units you are looking at will also cracked if mounted the same way. I would opt for real ST parts. Pacific still sells SW. Moving it off the baffle and not using the washers is not going to solve the problem?

I see the probability of much motion in that area what with the sheet metal carrying the load and a long vectored brace like you have swinging it. I can show you a better way to mount it if you contact me directly or you can take some other advice that I'm sure you will get from the listers.

I've been running a Setrab 10 row for around 750 hrs, no problems, temps often run too low and so its half covered with AL tape. It's about 1/3 the size of the standard Vans cooler.

They are made of aluminum rather than brass and AL just works better for a heat exchanger.


You can get aircraft fittings on them too, they even have swivel fittings at 90 and 45 degrees available.

Matt,

A few thoughts:
- Mounting the cooler on the firewall solves the "heavy vibrating object
mounted with a large moment arm" problem. Attached photo is how I did it on
the RV-10 (not shown is the forward cooler support attached to the engine
mount). On the RV-8A I mounted the cooler on the right side of the firewall
with the 3" hose connecting on the right side of the plenum. I believe most
8s are on the right side as there is more room.
- Mounting the cooler on the firewall allows for an easy "oil cooler air
butterfly valve" install in the 3" hose between the cooler and firewall.

- Consider using the AirFlow oil cooler if you end up buying a replacement.

Matt,
Nice job on those angle reinforcing plates. I would suggest examining the way the reinforcing plates lay against the oil cooler flanges. If the reinforcing plate presses on the radius of the oil cooler flange, it will introduce a stress into the radius. Your cure to your cracking problem may simply be to radius the reinforcing plate(s) so they don't press on the oil cooler's flange radius.
Regarding the softness of the oil cooler flange, that is a good thing. Soft metals are more ductile than harder alloys. Harder is generally stronger, but also more brittle.

I thought the source of the cracking
had been addressed.  I had some issues with the
left-rear baffle flange cracking too in the beginning. 
I made the rear baffle nice and strong, but used the stock
left-rear piece which was .032.  It just wasn't up for

crankcase just ahead of the hoist loop all the way back to
the left rear corner and added some .063 angle stiffners
over the oil cooler flanges for additional support. 
I'm wondering if I cracked the flange today taking the oil
cooler off.  It was pretty stuck on and I was having to
do a fair amount of prying to get it to separate from the
gasket.  I would have been more careful if I'd of
realized those flanges are made out of such crappy pot
metal.  Man, they are soft.

Since I'm rebuilding, I decided to rebuild the left-rear
baffle part and was taking the oil cooler off today to
accommodate that.  That's when I noticed the crack.

Attached are some pictures of the setup prior to disassembly
today.

I just dug back through my emails to find the skinny on the Setrab cooler.
I'm pretty sure it is this one:

It comes with straight on AN fittings but I couldn't get them to work in the space I had so I used these:http://www.hrpworld.com/store/default/an-10-x-m22-hose-fitting-90.html These fitting are mega expensive but swivel which takes alot of the stress off the attach points. I went this route for a few reasons: I had the stock cooler completely covered with AL tape and stillcouldn't get over 200 F temps.(Too much cooling) My baffles cracked from the weight of the stock cooler.(too much weight)I knew of a rv-6 built by 3 engineers(one is a DER) and they've flown 400 hrs trouble free with this cooler.I didn't do the firewall mount because i didn't want the hoses Even still when its cold I can't get over 160 F.

I have one with ~ 4 hours on it.  Will sell for an hours worth of fuel plus shipping.    Had unrelated cooling issues on first few flights, but everyone pointed to the non- standard configuration (on firewall) so I changed to SW clone on baffling and still hard other problems to resolve....  Now life is cool at 175 oil temp and < 330 CHT.

Also had this configuration....I'll send you photos when home, next week.   In short, mounted 2 parallel pieces of angle aluminum on firewall, and mounted Setrab to that.  Then built a fiberglass 'vulcano' to funnel the air.  Had a butterfly valve at the attachment to the baffling....

You can get aircraft fittings on them too, they even have swivel fittings at 90 and 45 degrees available.

On the RV-8, I've got Stewart/Warner 10610R 10 row oil cooler for the IO-390.
It's mounted on the rear baffle and its worked well and kept the oil temps in
the low 180's under all conditions.

I noticed today, that the outside mounting flange that goes next to the baffle
is cracked.  I suppose I could get it welded or brazed or whatever they do to
aluminium, but that seems like a hack.

Apparently, Chief doesn't carry the Stewart/Warner brand anymore and has to different
variants of the Aero Classic brand in the 10 Row 10610R compatible unit.

One is the "Standard" model for $269:

I originally flew my O-320 RV-6 in Southern California heat during September 1997 with an oil cooler mounted on the firewall with 3" SCAT tubing running to it.

I constantly had high oil temperature.  Relocating the oil cooler to the engine mount behind cylinder #4 with a full size opening duct to it just an inch behind the cylinder lowered oil temp 30 degrees F.

In a high heat environment with high power settings, I would not use a firewall mounted oil cooler and 3" SCAT to it.  There is not enough air flow going through the oil cooler with the setup that I originally had.
