Hi List
I see from a accident report in UK that a set of bubble doors broke up in flight, is this an isolated incident or have I missed other reports? as we have a set for the plane we are building but may now be banned from fitting.

If you are worried about the 701 doors coming off in flight I would recommend contacting Zenith and getting the latch kit for the 750. The 750 door is a bit larger and has three latch points as opposed to the one on the 701.

With more than 5 years (cant remember now) flying my 701 (about 300 hrs) and giving lots of rides... A few of them even without the doors.
I dont see any problem with the latching system of the 701 doors...

As in all aircraft: The Pilot (Captain) is responsible that the doors are correctly closed and the passengers seat belted and advised (Sit down, bucke up, dont touch, dont yell, dont complain:-) Before every flight.

The big first diferences from driving and flying is the planning and the check list(s)... I tell the parents of Young Eagles that learning to fly makes responsible boys.

Thanks for your replys However the reported problem was not with the latches.
The report from the pilot says The aircraft was performing gentle manoeuvers at 100 mph when the pilot noted that both cabin doors were bulging into the slipstream & almost instantly the left door fractured and departed the airframe.
These were the latest type bubble doors with a composite frame.

Just enquiring if anyone else flying with these have had any problems or are happy with them, as I have seen no reports on this list.

The only way that I have heard of the bubble doors failing in flight is if the latch pops and one opens up into the slipstream. That is why I suggested supplementary latches as a potential solution (at least one which might pacify the UK authorities).
The bubble shape of the door makes it act like an airfoil in flight and it is common for the doors to flex outwards a bit at the back edge. depending on how much material was trimmed from the fiberglass frame during installation, it is possible that the door flexed enough for the main latch bar to lose contact with the doorframe and the door pop open. In the slipstream at 100 mph the door could easily be ripped from the hinge or otherwise broken. The pressure change from one door popping could explain why the second door opened as well. While 100 mph doesn't sound like much, the VNE of the 701 is only 110 so really the plane was at the top end of its performance envelope.
All of this, of course, is idle speculation on my part. All I know for sure is after about 240 hours on my plane the only issue I have had with my bubble doors has been the need for weather stripping as it gets pretty chilly here in Canada in January.

A few years back the left door on my 701 blew off. It bulged out when a wind gust hit me head on as I was climbing out. The door was latched. As someone else said, the weather stripping on the forward edge was non- existent. I thought there was an explosion! The door split diagonally and I was able to retain both halves inside the cabin so the tail feathers weren't injured. I have built a simple bolt latch the captures the door's leading edge at the vertical portion of the door frame. I'm confident that it will remain sealed. There is probably a hundred hours on the redesign.

Please take note of this following incident......
http://www.stolspeed.com/701-door-warning

At the end of that article it shows how we added a sliding bar to the trailing edge of that door.  Since then we've added another sliding bar to the leading edge, so there are now three-points securing our doors.  Works very well.  I must get some photos of that arrangement and post them.
