Gidday,
I'm experimenting with an idea to incorporate a Flood panel light system, using dimmable LEDs. I don't want to see them, so I need to hide them in the instrument panel coaming, and to do that I need to thicken it. I'm interested if anyone else has done that, and I wouldn't mind making mine capable of accommodating an energy absorbing material, like a rubber hemispherical section. Below is the start of this little experiment with a foam buildup that I will sand back against the original panel, but thicken the coaming, and hopefully embed my LEDs within, so I can't see them. I also thought of incorporating either an annunciator bulge in the middle, or a Caution/warning light in the same spot. I'd like to request input especially from not too tall pilots (I'm 5'9"_175cm) as to the max thickness I could make the coaming without obscuring the top instruments.
Thanks.
Regards

Tony…see pixs below…I made the lip w/ 2 thicknesses of 3/8” dense but flexible white foam…not energy-absorbing…after rounding off, foam covered w/ 1 layer BID...I also extended the sunshade over the com panel and found that a 36” strip of LEDs was perfect and is bonded w/ silicone to the “back face” of the lip or valence which hides the lights from the pilot & passenger’s eyes.
For “energy-absorbing”, you might try some of that slotted round closed cell neoprene foam pipe insulation…just a thought…
Good luck,
Fred
