I've done plenty of Google searches and have seen lots of Kolbs. My ultralight airport has 8 Kolbs flying. I'm just wanting to see what everyone on the list has and try and generate some interest and discussion.

Nice Mark III Dennis. Thanks for posting. Sounds like Kolb won't be selling the Classic anymore unless under special circumstances. I think the Classic is more appealing to me than the Xtra.

The only problem I had with the Classic was that your legs have to angle in. With the Xtra your legs are straight out. I have a bad lower disc so after about two minutes in the Classic my back was hurting. No problem in the Xtra.
May not be an issue with you.

I like the 2 seat Kolbs but I am actually leaning towards a Firefly or Firestar build. I think I can afford to finish the project sooner with The FF or FS.
I've flown a friend's Firefly and thought the handling was nice and responsive like many have said. Out of curiosity, how much different is the handling in the FS than the FF. I was amazed at how much better the Firefly handles than my Quicksilver.
Any more pics guys?

Hey Tony,
Here are a couple of shots of my FF which is known as the FlagFly, built
by Don Gheradini. It has some custom work to the fabric on the cockpit
as well as an incredible paint job. Maybe some inspiration in some
way. Best wishes and enjoy the project.

This bird may be the finest example of a Firefly ever built. I would love to get a chance to fly it someday.

Here is a Firefly built by Brian Melborn for a customer in 2004.
I had the opportunity to fly it at Sun and Fun 2004.
Trying to remember correctly. Think I flew Don G's Firefly many years ago before he painted it in the flag scheme. Don was gracious enough to put me up for the night on a return flight from Oshkosh. Have no idea what year that was.

The two Fireflys mentioned above are easy to get mixed up due to the very similar paint. The one built by Don G and now owned my Mr Kulp has the single wing strut instead of the stock double strut. Just adds to the overall sexiness. 😜
Both birds are near perfect.

I met Don G at the Midwest Light Sport Expo in Mt Vernon, IL. We were talking to the owner of another Firefly that was on display at the show. He mentioned his modifications to the wing struts.
The Firefly I flew was right at 254 built with no brakes etc. How would a Firefly handle at gross weight of 500 lbs? Would be easy to get to that 500 lbs with me at 170 lbs plus 10 gallons of fuel and a Rotax 503.

I weighed it with a digital scale and two blocks of wood equivalent in height. It weighs just over 300# without the BRS. It has the split rim wheels with hydraulic disc brakes, extra tubing for the enhanced cockpit and compartment enclosure, gear leg fairings, I'm pretty sure a longer than stock FF nose cone. Also the seat is fiberglas with a padded cover which is likely heavier than the hammock seat.Â
The single wing strut makes the plane slipperyer, since, as I understand, the double strut was employed to slow the plane down. My cruise at 3/4 power is in excess of 65 mph.Â
I didn't think of it earlier in the thread but if you surf around Don's website that's on Dennis' post, you'll find an enormous amount of building tips and info. If not contact me and I'll rifle through my files to try to find it. Don's a Honda Motors engineer, has completed 5 homebuilts, his last a Luscombe, and an antique Indian motorcycle replica, and his advice is well worth reviewing.Â
I have numerous short videos downloaded on the web if you'd like to take another flight in it. There's one in especially rough air which will give you a good idea what these little sports car airplanes can do. My hand on the stick reflecting in the windscreen flipping side to side isn't my hand moving but the effect from bouncing about the sky. If you want to check them go to.  youtube.com/undoctor   and pick any video with the FlagFly on the thumbnail They're not polished like Larry's and some others but you can hear how the plane responds to the engine.Â

No doubt on the power. These Fireflies are little rocket ships with a Rotax 447.
No concerns about structural strength when flying at gross or somewhat over (500 lbs).
I'd like to put a 10 gallon tank in a Firefly along with a 503 (because I already have a good 503 that is still pretty new). I weigh about 175 so I'd be close to gross weight with 10 gallons (full fuel for a cross country).
