Don built my FlagFly to hold a 10 gallon Challenger fuel tank.  It fits nicely in the space behind the seat.

No doubt on the power.  These Fireflies are little rocket ships with a Rotax 447.

No concerns about structural strength when flying at gross or somewhat over (500 lbs).

I'd like to put a 10 gallon tank in a Firefly along with a 503 (because I already have a good 503 that is still pretty new).  I weigh about 175 so I'd be close to gross weight with 10 gallons (full fuel for a cross country).

Should be fine I would think. Definitely would have more than enough power. 😳

Tony I was considering a 503 on my Firefly and was discouraged by Kolb as it would take considerable frame stengthing to make the Firefly able to stand the extra power and vibration from the 503 . just an aside to consider. Chris

Good to see Chris A back on the List.

Happened upon a little history and decided to share it with you all. This
photo is me and my FS at the Prattville, Alabama, airport, Fall 1989. What
a difference 25 years makes.

More history. Me and my Ultrastar, 1984. The first airplane I built and
one of my favorites. It was also the first fixed wing aircraft I had every
flown. My test flight was also my fixed wing solo flight. I taxied up and
down the cow pasture airstrip. The pasture was rough with cow pies
everywhere. After a couple trips up and down the 600 foot strip I got tired
of getting covered with crap and beating up my brand new airplane. Next
time I turned around at the end of the strip I pushed the throttle wide open
and took off. It was wonderful to fly again for the first time since I got
out of a Huey 8 years prior. Wow! The Ultrastar didn't fly like a
helicopter, but I soon got used to it. Those were the good old days.

Hi,
re the `D-Day stripes on the wing. Put there as you probably know so that
the ack ack gunners just fired at anything without them.
My family ran a hardware and paint store during the war and just before
D-Day a lorry from the local airfield arrived and requisitioned all the
black and white paint we had in stock to paint the aircraft.

A couple of months ago at a meeting of ex glider and para`s I met the man
who signed the requisition more than 60 years ago. Long arm of coincidence.

Pat

Here is the Firestar II I picked up this past Summer. I've flown it about 25 hours and it is a blast. It was a builder assist by the original owner at the Kolb factory.

I edited the post to attache resized photos. Sorry for the original post with the large file sizes.

The guys at Kolb did beautiful work on this. They turn out top notch aircraft at their facility. Thanks to Bryan, Travis and the crew for keeping these designs alive.

Since it was a rainy day, spent today and tonight redoing the web page to include the FSII mods, including how to beef up the upper cage to run not just a 503, but a 582. Here it is:
