List
Need some advice on VG's. I need about 60 to put on one wing of an Xtra.
Is one brand much better than another? Anyone have specially good or bad experience with the various suppliers?
Thanx, Russ K

John Gilpin a fellow Kolb lister sells VGs, I've heard good things about his.
Otherwise I have no experience with them.

Russ, I bought VG's from Free Bird Innovations on eBay.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Vortex-Generators-Experimental-Aircraft-Ultralight-/200746539447?pt=Motors_Aviation_Parts_Gear&hash=item2ebd6d19b7&vxp=mtr

Good service, can't say if they're any worse or better than others.

If I ever take the time to install VG's I like the Stolspeed ones. Adhesive backing, no drilling, cleaner nicer look and easier to wash/wax the wings without them catching your brush or towel to much. Here is an article about VG's you might enjoy... http://www.bcchapel.org/pages/0003/FSII%20Vortex%20Generators.html
I e-mailed Stolspeed with questions and he answered quickly, a good man.
I copied my e-mail to him and his answers, I hope this info helps you.

My e-mail to Stolspeed...
Hello; In all my research for VG's on a Kolb Firestar II yours seem the best with many good reports. I'd like to order a set. A local aircraft shop will be doing some fabric work on my Firestar and I would like them to install the VG's. Is there any type of guide for placement on the Firestar II other than the general guide on your website? I would also install some on the bottom of the vertical stabilizer. The aircraft shop uses metal VG's and they get specific placement instructions for GA aircraft models. I know yours are not for certitfied aircraft but was wondering if there was a more specific guide for the Kolb Firestar II ? The aircraft tech said he could probably follow the guide on your website to do mine but he asked if there was anything more specific for my model? Thanks... Jeffrey Jacobsen Stolspeed... http://www.stolspeed.com/

Stolspeed, his reply...
Gday Jeffrey,
Yeh, I guess I should give more specific placement instructions for each aircraft, but we've found that the standard 7% to the front tips of the VGs to works very well. For the FireStar, that makes it 4.27". Other FireStar owners have found 6" to be still good. All my testing has shown that there is no 'sweet spot' as such, just a zone. But it is critical not to place them too far back; past 6" would be too far back. If I was doing a FireStar I'd place them with the front tips at 4.5" back from a vertical at the leading edge.
Wishing you success with your VGs.
Cheers,
JG

Only ONEwing Russ. What are you up to?.

I have heard from a guy who bought my Xtra from the guy to whom I sold it.
You remember that he took the 4 stroke off and replaced it with a 2 stroke.
The present owner has replaced the 4 stroke and the plane has now been
issued with a Certificate of Airworthiness. He is promising to fly down from
his home field to our local fly in later in the year. That will give me a
chance to see the old girl again.
Wx has been super for the last week or so. Chilly wind but blue skies and
good viz. We have the Popham Air Fair the weekend after next and that is
usually reckoned to be the beginning of the season.
We are in the throes of moving house as we have built a bungalow about 100
yards from our present house. Moving in a couple of weeks. This was all
brought on by my cancer and back problems. When we bought the plot nearly 2
years ago I was on 2 sticks and was forced to sell the Xtra because I
couldn`t hack the pulley hauley, carrying fuel etc.
thank goodness I am a lot better but at 85 I shall be glad not to have
staires to contend with.
During the clear out before moving I have found a painting which I had done
many ,many years ago of the syndicate Olympia 2.
Most of the guys flying now don`t know any Oly from a Grunau so I have
offered it to my old Gliding Club to use either as just a pic. on the wall
or as a prize for the Club Ladder Comp or best new pilot or something. They
have asked me to present it at the AGM in a couple of weeks time. That will
be nice. There are one or two members whom I remember from the old days.
Should be fun.

Good to hear from you, Pat. Any chance you could take a pic of your painting and email it to us Kolbers on the list?  I'd sure like to see it.

I second the request to have it posted. I just joined the SSA and started saving to get my glider rating this summer. It's a cheap add on to a PPL, just 10 flights and a check ride. Can't wait to get back into thermal flying.
