Desser tire company (www.desser.com), Mains: size 500x150 and Nose: 400x150. They also do retreads if you have a set to send them. Will save you $$. Free shipping and pretty good customer service. Also $10 off for AOPA members. Hope this helps.

Contact Desser Tire in California. They are the only supplier in the US. www.desser.com. They sell both the 500x150 and the 400x150 tires for both the Yak's and CJ's. They are US manufactured tires for Desser.

For what its worth, I've had better service life from the Chinese tires than the Dresser and they are less expensive.

While the Chinese tires have a rather short tread life, when subsequently retreaded by Desser they last forever.

It was mentioned on this thread that of late, Desser no longer accepts
Chinese or Russian cores for recap. I believe this was a correct statement.

Once recapped, their tires last for a very long time.

Guys,I spoke to Tony at Desser yesterday and YES they are still recapping the Chinese tires.
Also, has anyone out there actually ran a test, maybe one Desser and one Chinese tire to see which wore out first??  My honest opinion and experience tells me that either the Chinese have either changed their rubber formulation or the "soft Chinese rubber" story is exactly that, a story.  The tires which we have available at this time are of current mfg, not NOS.  No one to date has mentioned any problems.

In my opinion and based on my experience, THE absolute best way to assure you not only have a long lasting tire, but a tire that will be balanced and run smooth when installed, is to order Doug's Chinese tires and ship these brand new tires to Desser for retreading. Doing this will cost about the same as buying one, new Desser tire, but will last you 300+ hours of normal use versus 100 or so for the stock or new Desser tire. Plus you have a 50% chance of a new Desser tire not balancing properly when installed on the wheel assembly.

New Desser tires - Approximately $185 each
Cost of Doug's new Chinese tires - about half of the new tire price
Cost of retreading your cores - about half of the new tire price
Benefits = smooth running and 300+ hours of tread life.

The reason the retreaded tire is so well-balanced is because Desser retreads AND BALANCES all their retreaded tires themselves at their California plant. Whereas the new Desser tires are manufactured for them by one of the tire manufacturers and whatever or however that manufacturer balances the tire is what you get. Believe me when I tell you I have been there, done that and gotten several T-shirts fighting this problem and have replaced new Desser tires several times on the same airplane and on the same wheels because of a balance problem with the new tires. The old tires on that airplane were as smooth as glass. Changing to the retreaded tires solved the vibration/balance problem immediately and they seem to last forever because of the much better rubber compound of the retreads.

Paul,Doug Sapp here, I have the tires in stock, if interested please contact me off list 590-826-4610 PST 8am to 5pm.
May I ask why you prefer to buy from China rather than someone here in the US?  I am sure that by the time you pay for the tires (you must pre pay upfront) with a bank transfer ($40.00 at my bank), pay the shipping, and customs your net cost will be higher than the US price.  I might also add that unless you know the seller you really have no recourse should he send you something other than what you have ordered, or in the worse case, sends you nothing at all.  US parts vendors are here supporting the aviation community and most if not all stand behind their products and do what's right by their customers.  I am not saying that the Chinese vendors will not, just saying that you may find it easier and cheaper in the long run to fix a problem with someone who actually speaks and understands English and is a bit closer to home.

Best,
Doug

I have about 10 tires that need retread . Desser must have changed their minds because I went to send a set in last year and they told me NO !
I know for a fact their retreads last a lot longer than the Russian tires .
I also know there new tires last about 1/3 as long as a recap for me and I am not hard on tires. Doesn't matter where you get a tire to recap because Desser inspects it before doing any work. If the sidewall is not good enough or the cord is showing on the tread they will not do it. Buy a Tire from Doug !

Paul,
Don't you buy your CJ6 parts from Doug Sapp here in the US? He's the go-to guy for the Chinese tires and everything for the CJ.

Dresser notified me that the tires must pass visual as well as a pressure test and will be limiting to a total of 2 recaps per tire carcus. Dresser tires are not recap limited but the Chinese and Russian are.

Doug etal... I sort of ran a test a few years ago. Installed two new Chinese tires and after about 2-3 flights ran over something that cut the right main tire deep. So I installed a Desser retread and planned to run the Chinese tire until worn out. That came about 50 or so flight hours or about six months later. I installed the other Desser retread... That was in 2009 and I'm still on those retreads with around 500 hours on them. They still have plenty of tread left still although I noticed this weekend a little cracking or the beginning of "dry rot" on the original Chinese tire. I'm not sure about the manufacture date of the Chinese tires but I bought several pair back in about 2007 so maybe those tires were softer rubber. Another factor may be the heat here in the South. At any rate I like the Dessert over the Chinese.

I'm with Keith. The tires I bought from Doug had no balance issues at all. Ran them several months then sent them off for recap while I was wearing down another set of new...

I'm also in full agreement with Dennis... Doug Sapp is Da-Man when it comes to the CJ... From parts to technical advice. He especially enjoys those early morning calls that start with 'Doug, my airplane is broke. Why?'

BTW Doug... The new shimmy dampener made all the difference...thanks.

Paul,
I read and speak Chinese and my brother-in-law is living there. I also have Chinese friends who are in aviation business there. I can tell from experience that buying from Doug Sapp is much easier (and often cheaper) than trying to source parts from China. It is true that some parts are cheaper from China; however, by the time you add shipping, waiting time, custom/tariff, lack of warranty, ... there is no saving buying from China.
The best part about buying from Doug is his technical support. Doug will answer all questions about your CJ even if it is not related to the parts you brought. You are on your own if you buy from Chinese supplier.

Excellent point Keith. Potential sidewall cracking (aging) and an accidental flat spotting which might wear the tread to the cord would be the only reason I can think of.
