Hello all. Well, my airplane is completed. My "restoration" over the course of the winter has solved my CO problem, and I can now accurately tell you where and how it got in. My IN-FLIGHT CO readings are humorous now....

In normal climb, 2ppm. Cruise, 1ppm, and slow dirty flight, 4-5ppm. THATS IT!!! Does my co machine thingy work? Oh yes it does! Went off in my garage after only a short time of running my propane heater mid winter. I've got her sealed up good and tight, but not, if that makes any sense. I sealed the seat backs, and rubber booted the steering rods. Extended the exhaust down, dooowwwwwn another 10" or more. Got it down and away from the plane. Well, my shiny new interior has a really neat centre boot that covers up the Y stick. It's not a tight fit around the stick, but get this. Here is the airflow of the 601..... Canopy creates a low pressure in the cockpit, and air RUSHES up through the tail, desperately trying to equalize. In my case, being sealed up so well, the only place it could show itself was through the centre column. Air is ballooning out my Y stick center console cover. This is the source of the CO. It's air coming from the tail. If there is ANY exhaust stuck to the fuselage it will become part of this mass of air entering through the tail. Extending the exhaust Down so low, sealing the firewall, and the problem WILL go away entirely. I have a brand new custom exhaust because the original was leaking like a sieve. Hopefully I can post a picture of the finished product, or a link to the flickr account where you will see one hell of a transformation! This airplane is near PERFECT now! Having some issues with my flap motor, but I think it's a bad switch. Future updates on that problem.

Cheers, and I hope this helps others that have encountered the same problem. Just get that exhaust down and as far away from the fuselage as possible, as long as the exhaust stack doesn't hit the ground, you are long enough!

Thank you for sharing your findings. I'll be paying more attention in future flights! I have the 3300 with dual sticks, but my canopy is not sealed and leaks like a sieve.
Have you tried sealing the area under the horizontal stabilizer?
Many of the Sonix group is placing a grill on the underside of the fuselage at the tail as an exhaust for cabin air which seems strange especially if one is to pull in fumes????
What kind (brand name & model #) of detector are you using? I've been using the button.
That is a mighty nice looking bird!

Mack, I did block off the HT space under the tail. The detector is the yellow portable unit sold by Aircraft Spruce. I know it's accurate, as I mentioned it went off in my garage due to propane heater.
